Monday Through Friday PRESENTED BY WRIGLEY'S Spearmint Gum on Nehawka By Journal Field Representative The Nebraska City baseball team will be here Sunday to cross bats with the Nehawka boys. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hansen are enjoying a vacation trip that takes them to the Black Hills country of South Dakota and into Estes park in Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. William Jourgesen, vho have returned from a visit in Kansas, say it was not so dry and hot last week in the Sunflower state as it has been here. Mrs. Gertrude Carper who accom panied her son Lucian and family on a two weeks' trip to Estes Park, ar rived home last Sunday and reports a most enjoyable vacation. Stacey (Doc) Niday moved into his new house late last week and de clares it is just about the last word in an elegantly finished home. The place where he has been living was immediately occupied by Ray Snyder and family. Howard Heneger who has just re turned from Minnesota and North Dakota, where he was engaged in harvest work, says the first few days up there seemed to him much hotter than here, but later it was much cooler and one could work in com fort. Regular Services Resumed Regular services have been resum ed at the Methodist church, with the pastor, Rev. V. D. Lenker, back from a two weeks' vacation to deliver the sermon and there will be regular ser vices each Sunday hereafter. Trice Down and Up Dropping recently from 12 cents to a dime and now back up a penny to eleven cents marks the trend of a loaf of well known bread which is carried by our local merchants. The ten per cent advance became effective last Sunday morning. Nehawka Loses to Genoa The Nehawka baseball team made quite a trip for its game last Sun day, playing at Genoa, which is out beyond Columbus. The game went to the Genoa team who had the ad vantage of playing on their own diamond but who demonstrated some fire playing ability. Some of the team have reported crops up that way look "pretty thin and observed a section north of Co lumbus in which corn is badly burn ed and the farmers have begun get ting as much out of their fields as possible by pasturing the land. In most places out that way there were evidences of drouth again this year, which had been counted on as pro viding abundant moisture to raise a good crop. All of which demonstrates that Cass county is the garden spot of tbe state. Drove to York Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Herbie Kunt7 and the children drove to York Sunday intending to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Swanson, the former a brother of Mrs. Kuntz. Ar riving there they found that the Swanson family had left for a visit with relatives in South Dakota, so did not get to see them. It had been originally planned that Mrs. Kuntz was to accompany them on the trip, but as she did not get there sooner the Swausons thought she was not coming and so took their departure for the north without her. Move to Council Bluffs Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Lyons, who have made their home here through the past winter and up to now, left Tuesday for Council Bluffs, where Mr. Lyon has accepted a position. In speaking of the change, Mr. Lyon de clared it will seem like getting back near home, as they have lived in Iowa most of their lives. Visiting Relatives Here Miss Evelyn Wolph, Jr., a niece of our Nehawka Miss Evelyn and her brother Paul Wolph, arrived in Ne hawka a few days ago to visit the various relatives here. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wolph and lives in the west. While here Miss Wolph has also been a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ross, Albert Anderson and wife and a number of other relatives living in this vicinity. On Pleasant Vacation Trip For a real vacation lrip, here is one that just about takes the cake. Expecting to be gone three weeks, km OH NEW WAY LUNCH Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Steffens, Maxine and Laverne, together with Mrs. Mollie Magney, mother of Mrs. Stef fens, left Sunday noon. Their first stop was to be at Lake Okoboji, Iowa, and after a few days there, the group will go on to Wisconsin, where they will camp along Lake Michigan and enjoy the cooling breezes for which that vicinity Is famous. Then they expect to con tinue on east for a tour of many in teresting places. Wouldn't you just like to take such a trip? In order to make it, Laverne gave up a position which he has held in Omaha. Vacation Trip to West Miss Lanna McReynolds, postmis tress in Nehawka, left the fore part of this week for a vacation trip to the west, including Estes Park and other attractive .points. She will be gone fifteen days, the amount of time she is allowed for vacation by the government. The first few days are being spent at Alliance, where she is to be joined by her brother, Elmer McReynolds, and from there the two will tour the west together. Shocked while in Bath Tub Now that can be either as bad or worse than it sounds, but that is just what happened to our good friend, Stacey Niday, a few days ago. He was about to take a bath and had turned the water into the tub. When the water reached a depth of five or six inches he stepped into the tub, reaching up to turn on the electric light. With his hands moist, he en countered a shock and the current passed through his arm and body to the perfect "ground" created by his contact with the water and tub. He says the jolt was plenty severe and in breaking loose from the "hold" the current had on him, he suffered also a bruised shoulder from striking the tub. Now this may not be the kind of story you expected from the heading, but that's what happened and Stacey can well verify it. UNION ITEMS By Journal Field Representative Mrs. Lowell McQuinn was visit ing and doing some shopping in Om aha Monday afternoon. Jerome St. John of west of Ne hawka was looking after ' business matters in Union last Monday even ing. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Porter were in Omaha Friday of last week, look ing after business matters and doing some shopping. Mrs. Orville Hathaway, who has been troubled a great deal from at tacks of asthma, has been able to secure anatomizer which affords her great relief. Mrs. Agnes Kaura of Crete, moth er of Mrs. Dale Karnopp, and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Kaura of Omaha were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Karnopp over the week end, t Mr. and Mrs. Omar Clarke of Fort Worth, Texas, were guests at the R. E. Frans home for several days and also spent a day in Weep ing Water, guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Wright. Mr. Wright is a brother of Mrs. Frans. H. H. Becker and Otto Ehlers, both of whom are proficient acetylene welders, were in Omaha Monday and passed certain tests entitling them to certificates of ability as they ex pect to go to California and secure employment in an airplane manufac turing plant. Minnie and Phil (Rihn) visited over the week end at the Ralph Pearsley home at Leavenworth and the Ollie Eikenbary home in West Kansas City, Kansas. En route, they stopped at Weston, Mo., where they visited a tobacco house. While there they were given two "hands" of tobacco. For the benefit of those un acquainted with tobacco parlance, as are most of we northerners, let us say that a "hand" of tobacco is a bundle with the steams together and the leaves straightenou out, with an extra leaf of tobacco bound around the stems to hold the thing together and is the method used in hanging the tobacco up to cure. Phil brought the two "hands" home to show them to the trade. Radio Bugs Meet in Union Members of the Southeastern Ne braska 'Amateur Radio Association, composed of leading amateurs in this part of the country and having as well some members in the states of Iowa, Missouri and Kansas, held one i PLATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY. JOUWTAL of their periodic get-together meet ings in Union last Sunday afternoon at the home of Vic Clarence. Some interesting discussion of the problems and technique of amateur radio were, followed by a social hour, and all are looking forward to the next meeting as these "jam sessions" are most interesting and informa tive. Home from the West The families of Joe Banning and Carl Peters, who have been in the west, visiting along the Pacific coast as well as at intermediate points of interest, arrived home last Sunday. . They all came back well tanned and brown as berries. They tell o having a good time while away. Guest Pastors Here Rev. Cumin, an Omaha minister, was in Union lust Sunday and de livered a discourse at the Baptist church during the morning worship hour. Rev. J. C. Lowson, pastor of the Methodist church at Plattsmouth, was here Sunday evening and gave the evening sermon at the open air gathering last Sunday evening. The The Nichel girls sang a trio selection. A very good attendance was present and all enjoyed the fine sermon given by the Plattsmouth pastor. Home from the Hospital Mrs. Fannie Eikenbary, who has been at the Clarkson hospital in Omaha and who underwent an opera tion there, was able to return home last Sunday. Mrs. Eikenbary has been a patient at the hospital and had, returned for a further operation and treatment. She is getting along very nicely, but is still weak from the effects of the ordeal. While in the hospital, she enjoy ed a visit from her former pastor here, Rev. McGaughey and wife, who are now living at Craig, where Rev. McGaughey is pastor of the Metho dist church. Her trip honie was made with Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Hammers! rom of Omaha, who were coming here to visit Mrs. Hammerstrom's mother, Mrs. Barritt. Summer School Students Home With the closing of the summer school at Peru, the Misses Ruth Morris and Jane Christensen, teach ers, who have been taking summer studies there, are, home and will spend the remainder of their vaca tion here. They are to teach in the country schools the coming school year. On Fishing Trip in Minnesota Blair Porter of Union, John Por ter. Harry Porter and Ed Dasher of Plattsmouth are leaving today on a trip to Minnesota, where it has been rumored that fishing is good as well as plenty of cool water in which to take a bath. The boys expect to be gone about a week. Evidence of Their Trip Going east through Union Monday afternoon was a car from the east, on the bumpers of which were a number of elk horns which they were evidently taking back home as tokens of a most enjoyable hunting trip to the west. They had just about all that could be loaded on the car. Relatives Guests Here Mrs. Rosella Clarke has been en joying a visit from her sister, Mrs. Theo Hinds of Council Bluffs and from a cousin, Mrs. Rebecca Soverly of Kansas, whom she had not seen for fifty-one years.
