Mrs. George Morton was guest at the home of Mrs. Anna M. Hargus last Friday when a very pleasant visit was enjoyed. Dr. and Mrs. G. II. Gilmore of Murray were visiting in Union last Monday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. Ray Frans. The ladies are sisters. Wade Karhopp was in Lincoln as sisting with the work of conducting the state fair and during the time the store was looked after by Mrs. Karnoff. Mary Becker was called to Lincoln to assist In the work of conducting the state fair for 1940, the affairs at the bank being cared for by Mrs. James Chriswisser. C. E. McCarthy and family anad Mrs. A. M. Hargus were visiting Sat urday at Nebraska City where they all looked after business and attend ed a show in the evening. W. A. Ost and daughter and his nine - year - old niece, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Nutzman. attended the motor boat races in Nebraska City on Labor Day. At the country home of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Griffin last Friday eve ning was given a very enjoyable dance, a good time being enjoyed, with the firemen of Union as guests. Mesdames Wm. Barritt. Mrs. Joe Banning and Miss Pearle Banning were visiting in Nebraska City last Saturday evening where they enjoy ed attending a movie during the eve ning. Mrs. C. F. Harris has been visiting in Lincoln over the week-end and Labor Day, or rather a short distance east of town at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Stone, where she enjoyed a fine visit. Wr. B. Banning has been doing some work at the state fair, he being employed during the session of the fair was in Lincoln last Monday, ac companied by Mrs. Panning and hi sister. Miss Pearle. Tnesday of this week Mrs. P. F. Rihn gave the afternoon entertain ed at her home members of the Woman's club. Mrs. C. L. Greene was an out of town guest, she making her home at Louisville. Taking advantage of the Labor Day holiday when the post office was closed, C. F. Harris (who owns the building) had Frank Boggs paint the floor so thr.t it would dry with out being tracked over. Last Thursday Mrs. McGaughey and Mrs. Donald McQuinn entertain ed the Ladies' Aid of the Methodist church, when they enjoyed a very pleasant gathering and did much good work for the church. The Methodist church of Union will on the coming Sunday hold their quarterly conference and the day will be featured by an all day meet ing with dinner at the church and a general fellowship gathering. A letter from Mrs. Howard Worn pole, formerly Miss Marjorie Hoback, tells of them getting settled in the west at Ellenberg, Washington, and "saying that the day the letter was written Mrs. Wompole was canning peaches. Senf where all enjoyed a very pleasant evening. Sterling Harris some years ago injured his leg, which caused him some concern. Just recently the leg swelled and was very sore and had to be lanced, which relieved the pres sure and is just now feeling better with hopes of it returning to its normal state. Henry II. Becker who has been sinking a well near 'Meadow just across the river from Louisville, has completed the well with pump in stalled and 84 feet of water. Mr. and Mrs. Becker and son went to Nebras ka City Labor Day to attend the motor boat races. Sterling Harris, who maintains the home at the farm or that portion of it in which he and family reside with the parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Harris, it was desired to install a furnace, found it necessary to do some brick work and C. F. Harris grabbed a trowl and went to work. It required four days to complete the work, at the end of which time he was weary and sore of muscle. Mrs. E. B. Chapman who was visiting for a number of days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Chap man at Ashland, enjoyed a very pleasant visit. On her return Mon day afternoon, she passed via Eagle and six miles east of that place came upon a wiecked auto in which four were injured. Doctors were call ed by passing motorists and the in Jurod takaen to Lincoln to the hos pital. Find Friend Better. Elmer Withrow and Frank Pauer were in Nebraska City last Sunday where they visited at the St. Mary's hospital with J. B. Roddy who has been a patient there for several months. They found him improved and expects soon to leave the insti tution. James C. Roddy, a brother, went down a few days later to bring him homo for a short time in order to see how the change would act on (his health He had been there for '.some time on account of a stroke he sustained. Home From Trip to East. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Opp and their daughters who have been visiting in the east for some two weeks, re turned home last week and was checked in as agent of the Missouri Pacific last Monday. Mr. Opp states they enjoyed their visit very much and had the opportunity of visiting many of the larger buildings in New York City, including the R.C.A. building. They secured an apartment while there. On their return they stopped in Chicago for two days. They also visited Washington, I). C, while in the east. Entertains Bridge Club. Mrs. Joe Panning was hostess at the meeting of the Union Bridge club last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Carl Peters of Nebraska City and Mrs. Eugene Roddy of Union were guests. In the playing Mrs. A. M. McCarroll was winner of first prize and Mrs. Nels Madson second while Mrs. Eu gene Roddy was winner of the guest prize. Supplied the Vacancy. During the period whey Mr. anad Mrs. C. L. Greene resided in Union. Mrs. Greene has been a devoted work er in the Baptist church and Bible school, Mrs. Greene being a very successful teacher. With their de parture for Louisville where they are entering business a vacancy was left in the church work as well as in the Bible school. Business called Joseph I. Cirley of Weeping Water to Lincoln on last Tuesday, he making the trip on the train. Ross Dennis and family visited at the home of their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Paul son, at Shallico, a week ago Sunday. Miss Dorothy Huntemen of Table Rock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Huntemen, residing a number of miles south of town arrived home and has been visiting for a short time with the parents and her many friends here. Rev. and Mrs. George Hunt, former pastor of the Weeping Water Con gregational church who went to Ohio last year to accept a pastorate, were visiting with friends in Weeping Wa ter and Avoca for a short time last week. L. A. Wiseman on the same day Nissley Marshall sustained a fracture of his ankle also received a severe injury on his ankle and has had to keep the ankle bound up hoping that he will not have to rely on crutches to get about. Mr. and Mrs. S. Ray Smith were in Lincoln Sunday, August 26, for a visit with their son Milford Smith, who recently graduated from a mor tuary school at Kansas City and has accepted a position with the Roberts mortuary in the capital city. , Mrs. Edna Shannon departed last week for Grand Island where she is making a stay of several days visit ing at the home of her daughter. The daughter formerly made her home at Hastings but recently moved to Grand Island where she and hus band reside. Milford Smith, of Lincoln, was an overnight visitor at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Ray Smith, during the past week. He had made a trip to Hamburg, Iowa, with a body that was to be buried there, and stopped here on his way home. He is well pleased with his work for a Lincoln mortuary. J. A. Klepser, a brother of our townman, Campbell Klepser, who makes his home at Rome, Oregon, arrived in Weeping Water last week and is visiting his brother. He ex pects to remain until after the coun ty fair. He formerly resided here but has been away for the past thirty years. . . Virited Mother on Labor Day. Miss Helen Gorder. daughter of Mrs. Fred II. Gorder. who makes her home at Grand Island, where she is librarian of the public library with the coming of Labor Day, which pro vided a vacation, came to Weeping Water to visit her mother, Mrs. Fred H. Gorder. who was greatly pleased to have her home. She returned to her work Monday evening. Nissley Marshall Doing Nicely While Nissley Marshall, who suf fered a fractured ankle some ten days ago while playing ball, is re ported as getting along nicely at this time but still has to be in bed. His grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Marshall of Douglas were over to visit him. Loses One and Gains One. That is the condition of the Cas cade school which is taught by Miss Jeanette Snell, and who was there teacher last year. Last year there were seven scholars, one going on to high school, leaving six. How ever a little tot had added a year and came to school, boosting the number to seven again. Attended Cecil Schaal Funeral. The remains of the late Cecil Schaal of California who was so ill his mother and father-in-law hasten ed to his bedside, passed away last week, the remains being' shipped to the Horton funeral home at Platts mouth, arriving Sunday. The fun eral was held Tuesday afternoon at Plattsmouth and the remain brought to Weeping Water for interment at Oak wood cemetery. Those attending the funeral from here were Lawrence Askew. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Gibson, uncle anad grand parents of the young man, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Sudduth, Daniel Sudduth and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nickles and Peter Nelson. Married Same Year, Same Month On September 3rd was the 31st wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Spencer J. Marshall. They have made their home in Weeping Water dur ing their married life. Mrs. Mar shall's name before marriage was Miss Pattie Nissley. This couple has many friends who extend con gratulations and best wishes. Twenty-six days later Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Keckler were United in marriasrf nnr! havn mnHo thrin Vinmo in Cass county, but not all the time in Weeping Water, but in this vi cinity. They like the other couple have a host of friends who extend congratulations and best wishes. Gave Fine Entertainment. Last Saturday as the different business firms of Weeping Water take turns of putting on some entertain ment, last Saturday night was the turn for the Cole Motor company, Guy Hopkins and the Western Lime stone company. They provided the following pro gram: Piano duet, by Warren and Wen dell Cole representing the Cole Mo tor company which was very fine and greatly appreciated by the listeners. Following that was a duet by Pattie Winscott and James Davidson. The third was a tumbling act by Dr. Herman and son Jack. This was of an exciting uature-and appealed to the onlookers. Fourth was the Busy Tommies by Corkey Hopkins. This provoked a good deal of laughs and hand clap ping. Next was a peanut rolling contest in which a number of artists at this particular sport were entered. The scheme was to roll a peanot over a canvass spread out a distance of nearly twenty feet with one's nose. The distance looked long when a crowd of merry people were guying and chiding the rollers, especially when the peanut would not go in the richt direction. Marion Rector was the winner. Then came a vocal solo by Eileen Fitzpatrick, which was highly ap plauded as she sang in a very dis tinct voice. A vocal solo by Louis Brickford followed which was greatly appre ciated as the crowd endeavored to call him back, but he would not come as there were others to appear. A boxing exhibition was then staged by Dr. Herman and son. Jack. This was mostly for points and show ed a good bit of science by both boxers. We were not apprised what the program for r.ext Saturday night is r to be. DINETTE SPECIAL Iliatt Furniture Co. is advertising a five-piece dinette set at a special low price this week.
