A town that is large enough and > ood enough for a. man to earn his living in is good enough for him to luiy his provisions in. If he does not. think so, both lie and his town would he better off if his lent were, pitched on other prairies. A school teacher having instructed i pupil to purchase a grammar, the next day recleved a note thus worded from the child's mother: “I do not desire for Lulu shall ingage in gram mar, as 1 prefer her ingage in yuse ful studies ami can learn her how to »poke and write properly myself. 1 have went through two grammars and : can’t say as they did me no good. 1 prefer her ingage in german and drawing and vocal music on the peano." Noff years‘Is a grand, an inspiring occasion, for it is always saturated with hope. We are wont to scott at and deridi it as a day when men make good resolutions only to break them; when they turn over new leaves, as it is called, merely to turn them back again. They want, they hope to do better, and but few of them are so. They determine to ad vance, and if they do advance they slip hack. Their failures are many.j are continuous, and often excite I laughter. Hut it is worthier to deter- j mine and decline, to hope and be dis-1 appointed, than not to determine or! hope at all. Determination and hope add to our contest, or at least dimin ish our discontent, and they are born of New Years. The greet need of human life is content, never attain ed, never attainable. And through New Years wo are deluded into hc iiet of its possibility. Therefore wel come be New Years, not for what ii gives, but for what it promises to give. if a man who toils fourteen hours a day, wears overalls and a check ered shirt, amt liis wife wears a poor 'futility of calico, how does it happen that the fellow who never works at all wears broadcloth and his wife wears seal skin?
