Nebraska in November Thi- office is receipt of .1 co n muDication from A. L. C’aviness president of the Nebraska State Teacher's Association, calling attention to the next meeting to be held in Lincoln November ;j. -1, 5. i‘.nib. Heassures us that school boards quite general!}’ througliout the state, are giving their cordial support by voting, to allow their teachers a vaca tion. on full pay, on the above dates in order that they may at tend the meeting. Spejuting of the association he says: “It is a voluntary or ganization of teachers and oth ers interested in education. In no sense is it a labor or trade organization, fur it does not ad. vocate strikes or dictation to school authorities. I t never meddles in politics nor does it promise its members assistance in finding employment or secur ing increased salary. “It stands for improved meth ods and better school facilities, and its highest ideal is unselfish devoted service to the future citizen. Surely the wide-awake, progressive teacher who >acri fives membership fee. railroad fare and hotel bill, ought to re ceive regular pay for the two days spent in attending its meetings. “'ror the past forty years this association has advocated in advance every good feature <>f our present school laws and has j used it's whole influence to make them effective. It ha- brought the men and worm n engaged in school work in c oser touch, in. spired them with common ideals and aroused a high professional pride in a calling in which the. great majority continue but a short time. •‘For the meeting next Xovem ber t h e executive committee promises the best program in the history of the association and the indications point to an unprecidented attendance. Men of national reputational repre tation will appear on the pro gram, as Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee, Ala.; Principal G. 13. Morrison. St. Louis; H. T. Bailey, North Scituali. With the men of the labor and trade organizations here, these women declare that another trust in an every day necessity will he created, if congress should fail to accept the just judgment of Ms committee of senators. That the working men and wo men in every section of (his eour. try are commending the senate proposal to do away with the ad ditional tariff tax on stockings which the house was led to put in the Payne bill, is shown by re ports which have been today re ceived at the headquarters of this movement here. In striking out the proposed increase in duty against cotton stockings where no higher taritf o n the silk stockings of the wealthy was call ed for, the senate committee has saved the measure from becoming rank class legislation, according to the consumers who are communi cating to this city the sentiment of the people in their localities.
