It is rumored that James J Hill is
contemplating a complete merger of the
Burlington with the Great Jtforthern
road involving the loss by the Burling
ton of its name and its indentity At
present the Burlington works in close
relation with the Great Northern and
the Northern Pacific Vice President
Willard said that ho did not believo that
a merger was contemplated President

Record Herald
Omaha Neb Nov 19 Tho Bee says
today
Within oce week the equity which
tho Northern Pacific now holds in the
Burlington will pass into the hands of
the Great Northern and within fifteen
days the Burlington and Great Northern
will be merged into one vast system
with James J Hill in control
This statement was made to a re
porter for the Bee this morning by a
man close to the official family of the
Hill roads who has just returned from
Chicago where the intricate operations
of his gigantic transaction are now be
ing perfected Ho makes the state
ment without reservation
For prudential reasons this man ex
tracted the promise his name would not
be used in this connection
So far as tho lines of the Great
Northern Northern Pacific and Burling
ton are concerned these three- roads
lack but one little link now of being in
fact one great system When the short
cut from Billings to Great Falls Mont
is completed the unification will be con
summated The western terminus of
the Burlington is Billings where it
meets the Northern Pacific A line has
1 ee in process of construction for some
time from Billings to Great Falls where
the Great Northern runs on its way to
the coast
This line will soon be finished and
when it is the three great railroads will
be joined and merged physically into
one vast system but tho federal govern
ment objecting tho Northern Pacific
will not be named in the union
