five cents the Great Northern It is rumored that James J Hill is contemplating a complete merger of the Burlington with the Great Jtforthern road involving the loss by the Burling ton of its name and its indentity At present the Burlington works in close relation with the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific Vice President Willard said that ho did not believo that a merger was contemplated President Harris is out o f the city Chicago Record Herald Omaha Neb Nov 19 Tho Bee says today Within oce week the equity which tho Northern Pacific now holds in the Burlington will pass into the hands of the Great Northern and within fifteen days the Burlington and Great Northern will be merged into one vast system with James J Hill in control This statement was made to a re porter for the Bee this morning by a man close to the official family of the Hill roads who has just returned from Chicago where the intricate operations of his gigantic transaction are now be ing perfected Ho makes the state ment without reservation For prudential reasons this man ex tracted the promise his name would not be used in this connection So far as tho lines of the Great Northern Northern Pacific and Burling ton are concerned these three- roads lack but one little link now of being in fact one great system When the short cut from Billings to Great Falls Mont is completed the unification will be con summated The western terminus of the Burlington is Billings where it meets the Northern Pacific A line has 1 ee in process of construction for some time from Billings to Great Falls where the Great Northern runs on its way to the coast This line will soon be finished and when it is the three great railroads will be joined and merged physically into one vast system but tho federal govern
