Folk a Friend of Papers
Jefferson City Mo July 18 Gover
nor Joseph W Folk in addressing the
retail merchants of Missouri at their
convention here yesterday spoke against
the mail order business and favored ad
vertising in the town papers He said
in part
We are proud of our Bplendid cities
and we want them to increase in wealth
and population and we also want our
country towns to grow We wish the
city merchants to buid up but we also
desire the country merchants to prosper
I do not believe in the mail order cus
tom If a place is good enough for a
man to live in and make his money in
it is good enough for him to spend his
money in it
No merchant can succeed without
advertising in some way or another
Patronize your town papers build them
up and they will build the town up in
crease your trade and greater opportun
ities Do not be afraid that business is
going to be hurt by the recent exposures
of wrong doing in the commercial
world No man who is doing an honest
business can be injured by the light All
business will be bettor for the cleansing
process it is going through and for the
stamping out of the evil

Messrs Hamilton Akers the con

begins to loom up in proportions not yet
understood by McCook people with its
length of 130 feet and width of 50 feet
and stage as large as the requirements
of city a number of times larger than
is a McCook today
Plans and specifications for the new
scenery have been received from Sos
man Landis he scenic artists of Chi
cago and they assure Manager W S
Bixler that he will have the best ap
pointed display of scenery in any opera

has had considerable experience in the
theatrical business selected the scenery
and will assist in its installment Sam
Amburg formerly stage manager at
McVickers theatre in Chicago who is
now manager at Manhattan beach Den
ver will be hero when the new opera

Gillilan Humorist
The gentleman appeared before a
full house at the Menard last Friday
evening and pleased many He was
funny Neither his humor nor his
pathos were of the first class They
were just a little short of the expected
excelsis all the time His initial appear
ance was foolish You were in doubt
whether or not it had come from the
zoo or No 5 But he made you laugh
some and occasionally mado you sober
and thoughtful with a tender tid bit
Very Satisfactory
The Dunbars gave great satisfaction
at South Haven Michigan The fine
peal of bells was handled with consum
mate skill and the selections were of the
finest In quartettes the voices blend
beautifully and the expression and
enunciation were well nigh nerfect
Again and again they were encored The
cello solo and the trio for flute cello
and piano were very fine
