The Republicans of Clay county
courageously did what the Republicans
of Red Willow county failed to perforin
endorsed Hon W E Andrews candi
dacy for the United States senatorship
Ho deserved better at the hands of Red
Willow Republicans
It is always easier to stand pat
than it is to progress The Republican
is tho party of progress Better still
beats well enough It takes courage
to meet the demands of growth ad
vancement and changed conditions
Tho Republican party has always hadd
courage to do what in wisdom more than
inexpediency seemed right
The Republicans of Furnas county
went out of their way in their late coun
ty convention to go on record as against
a state constitutional convention which
is desired in the main to create new
offices and increase the salaries of those
already in existence It is a quite
generally admitted fact that a constitu
tional conventu n is really needed It is
also notorious that Nebraskas state
officers are insufficiently paid A con
stitutional convention intelligently and
patriotically conducted would be a boon
to Nebraska One controlled by the
politicians and corporations might fall
far short of a blessing But tho present
constitution is inadequate and tho voters
of Nebraska have repeatedly shown
themselves unable and incompetent to
correct the matter at the polls

In the Outlook Mr F II Spearman has
a little sketch entitled The Nerve of the

mans characteristic forceful style will
interest many readers The railroad
holds an indescribable fascination for
most people Who when he sees a long
string of moving freight cars does not
stop to count them What is as splen

event in our national existence The
vast territory comprehended within the

by what seems at this distance of time
to have been little less than a miracle
and when we contemplate the situation
we tremble for what might have been

the Mississippi
The Judge is a short story of some
merit one that will appeal more strong

lawyer The incident recorded may have
happened though one doubts whether
it did and is inclined to brand it as
romantic fiction

Xrx Uedljeval Cities
Theit can be no doubt that one rea
son why cities did not grow so rapidly
In the seventeenth and eighteenth cen
turies as in the nineteenth is the ex
cessively high death rate that pre
vailed during the earlier period The
flood of immigration mighty as it was
did little more than make good the
places of those citizens who fell vic
tims to grievous sanitary conditions
From the facts that can be obtained
it seems to have been universally true
that almost up to the beginning of the
nineteenth century the death rate of
large cities exceeded the birth rate
This was not because the birth rate
was abnormally low but because the
death rate was abnormally high In
the mediaeval city both birth rate and
death rate were far higher than at
present Infant mortality must have
mounted to a grewsome height The
uncleanlinesr and overcrowding of city
dwellers now largely relegated to the
slums of our great cities was the nor
mal state of nearly all classes of so

Consul ICiiipr David
This amusing anecdote of LamartineH
Is related by the Baroness Bonde in
her volume of letters Shortly after
the revolution of February he wrote
on the blank leaves of his pocketbook
the names of his protegees and sent
the list to be provided with places im
mediately Previously however it
seems he had scribbled David on
the page and the head of the cabinet
appointed the said David consul at
Bremen the postulant however never
came forward and though the poet did
not like being disturbed M Hetzol
was obliged to ask who was the David
on His list
He who danced before the ark
was the answer
Oh dear I have gazetted him to
Bremen
How very singular I meant him
for a subject for meditation not for
nomination But you can cancel It
The moniteur registered the chan3
but few knew that the last consul ap
pointed to Bremen was King David

she cares nothing about dancing and a
