The Republicans of Furnas county
went out of their way in their late coun
ty convention to go on record as against
a state constitutional convention which
is desired in the main to create new
offices and increase the salaries of those
already in existence It is a quite
generally admitted fact that a constitu
tional conventu n is really needed It is
also notorious that Nebraskas state
officers are insufficiently paid A con
stitutional convention intelligently and
patriotically conducted would be a boon
to Nebraska One controlled by the
politicians and corporations might fall
far short of a blessing But tho present
constitution is inadequate and tho voters
of Nebraska have repeatedly shown
themselves unable and incompetent to
correct the matter at the polls

first to his essay An Hour with our
Prejudices Those who have not the
advantage of his acquaintance can have
no better introduction to him than
through the medium of this article No
more delightful essayist is producing
today Of those who have written he
takes rank with Charles Lamb
In the Century The Sea Wolf is pur
suing its somewhat remarkable course
Not since Stevenson has the reading
world read the like of it Jack London is
no such artist as the older writer not
yetat least but Jack London is young
and will doubtlessmprove A mans
tastes change though early impressions
often remain Perhaps a re reading of
Stevenson would disclose him in a differ
ent light to that in which he blazed
forth to a boy However that may be
Jack Londons romances seem not quite
to have attained the standard set by
Stevenson or even by Stephen Crane in
some of his shorter stories

Holdrege Sells His Big Farm
Plattsmouth Neb May 2 Special

purchased from G W Holdrege general
manager of the Burlington railroad his
large lanch near Louisville in this
county consisting of 800 acres The
purchase price is understood to havo
been 50000 On the property is located
tho old Boss Stout house or castle
which was built by him years ago for
tho purpose or housing the state convict
laborers from the state penitentiary
while they were working in the stone
quarries alongthe Platte river now own
ed by Newell Atwood
Mr Parmele will dispose of tho house
and about five acres of land to the Na
tional Swedish Mission association for
10000 which will be used as a training
school for clergymen Louisvillo will
donate the sum of 2000 to assist the
association in getting a start
Mr Holdrege had the ranch improved
regardless of expense by having enorm
ous hog and cattle barns built and ev
erything done that was necessary to
make it the best up-to-date rancn in
Nebraska

Theit can be no doubt that one rea
son why cities did not grow so rapidly
In the seventeenth and eighteenth cen
turies as in the nineteenth is the ex
cessively high death rate that pre
vailed during the earlier period The
flood of immigration mighty as it was
did little more than make good the
places of those citizens who fell vic
tims to grievous sanitary conditions
From the facts that can be obtained
it seems to have been universally true
that almost up to the beginning of the
nineteenth century the death rate of
large cities exceeded the birth rate

was abnormally low but because the
