Cause of Shortage
Lincoln like McCook was afflicted
with a water famine during the mid
summer drouth and meters were re
quired The leakage was soon discovered
as the following from the Lincoln Journal
reports Water Commissioner Tyler
said that the bills for the quarter com
prising the months of July August and
September explained why the depart
ment was hard pressed during the drouth
season Some customers who have
never paid more than 5 water rent for a
quarter will pay more than 20 dollars
for those three months During the
continued dry spell more water was used
than ever before in a like period in the
history of the city Mr Tyler says it is
little wonder that the department was
unable to maintain pressure during all
this time The supposed leaksin the
service have all been found by the meter
inspectors It is in such time as this
quarter that the man who uses water on
schedule rates without a meter gets the
department

The meeting of the Railway Mens
club last evening was of especial inter
est being the first meeting of the club
after the summer vacation The talk of
Asst General Supt G W Rhodes of
Lincoln was most instructive and enter
taining being heightened by the fact
that he but recently returned from
Europe where he has been making
something of a study of the railroad
problem He reported finding some
things of advantage to American roads
as well as considerable that is inferior to
American methods and practice This
was the principle feature of an altogether
interesting session
