OFFICIAL CITY & COUNTY PAPER.
PROCLAMATION.
Our love and thanks aa u nation and people ,
for the preservation of our united country ,
can bo expressed In no more appropriate form ,
in time of peace , than by showing In what
reverence wo hold the memory of our heroic
dead who fell in defense of this union. Our
gratitude for the services they rendered and
tbo sacrifices they made , prompts ua as a free
and enlightened people to commemorate their
strugglo.which-brongbt us greater liberty and
and n more advanced civilization. For these
reasons , May 30th is designated ns Decoration
Day. and is u national holiday , at which time
all uecular occupations should cease.
TIIBKBPOKK. I. C. T. Brewer. Mayor of the
City of McCook. Nebraska , do request that the
business houses and all labor occupations
cease on that day. from 1 to 4 o'clock , P. M.
That devotional and other appropriate exer
cises be bold in our churches and public halls ;
that the graves of our dead soldiers bo visited
and bedecked with evidences of our memory
and respect for the deeds the ) did for us while
living. C. T. Brewer. Mayor.
Dated at McCook. Neb. . May 21,1891.
THE grcenbackers arc in the saddle
; it the Cincinnati Convention , and a
third party movement has been deter
mined upon.
OMAHA'S clearance record continues
showing an immense decrease , over
40 per cent. And prohibition didn't
carry either. How is it , Mr. Rosewater ?
BEN 11. COWDREY , ex-secretary of
state , was appointed a member of the
board of state bank examiners , Wednes
day of this week , vice A. P. Brink , re
signed.
POLITICALLY Omaha is constructed
after the similitude of a great , big ,
overgrown , overbearing , brutal booby ;
who is only kept sufferable by repeated
and emphatic drubbings : And she
will get them , too.
THE most conspicuous service the
Omaha Bee can do the Republican
party of Nebraska at this time is to go
over into Undemocratic camp bag arid
bairgace. And if he can take John C.
Watson along with him John would
never be missed.
IT OCCURS to THE TIUBUNK that
botli the old parties err in judging of
the possibilities of this independent
movement. A decision based upon the
fact that it in cursed like all parties
with u disreputable office-seeking fringe
is not a substantial one , at least.
A MODEST man in politics , in all
parties , is a flat failure , no matter how
much brains and integrity he may have.
Self-confidence and self-assertion
- - are
necessary to success. Gall and cheek
added to ability are indispensible in
securing a promotion or recognition in
politics. Hastings Independent Trib.
JAMES E. BOYD has been deprived
of the office of Governor of Nebraska.
. . . . He is "a plain , blunt man , " and
frankly told the members of the State
Irrigation Convention that he was op
posed to any attempt to reclaim the
arid region and preferred the cowboy to
the homesteader. He need therefore
expect to see no tears dripping from the
irrigation ditches of western Nebraska
on his account. Irrigation Age.
THE Burwell water power and irri
gation company has filed articles of in
corporation with the secretary of state.
The incorporators are Thomas H. Doran -
ran , S. L. Reasoner , Frank A. Web
ster and A. Mitchell. The capital
stock is $25,000. The company's pur
pose is to construct a water power for
manufacturing enterprises , and a canal
for irrigating farms in Rockford pre
cinct , Greeley county.
IT is a common error in politics to
confound means with ends. Constitu
tions , charters , petitions of right , dec
larations of rights , representative assem
blies , electoral colleges , are not good
government ; nor do they , even when
most elaborately constructed , necessari
ly produce good government. Laws
exist in vain for those who have not the
courage and the means to defend thsui.
Electors meet in vain where want makes
them the slave of their landlord , or
where superstition makes them the
slaves of the priest. Representative
assemblies sit in vain unless they have
at their command , in the last resort , the
physical power which is necessary to
make their deliberations free and their ,
votes effectual. Macaulav.
"W. H. Seward : My young friends ,
the newspaper will have the last word ,
and it is not seeking for truth , but for
triumph. You need not respect the
vex populi too much , as it is given to
hasty utterances and frequent contra
dictions , but on the ultimate sound
judgment of the people you may always
rely. Young gentlemen , as you come
forward in the struggle of life , are ad
mitted to practice and choose your
places of residence , and take yourstand
among your fellow-men , it will be well
for you to identify yourselves at once
with one or the other of the principal
political parties of the country it
makes very little difference which. If
you look for office and perferment it
will be vain to identify yourself with
any third party , for long before that
third party can gain * power it will be
come merged into one of the others.
I have sacrificed as a lawyer all that I
have gained as a statesman. If you
ralue domestic happiness , the pleasures
of hcme , a life of ease and quiet , keep
out of the path of the office-seeker.

Ptfhipi no local disease bus puzzled and baf
fled the medical profession more than nasal
catarrh. While not immediately fatal it is
among the most distressing and disgusting ills
the flesh is heir to , and the records show very
few or no cases of radical cure of chronic
catarrh by any of the multitude of modes of
treatment until the introduction of Ely's
Cream Balm a few years ago. The success of
this preparation has been most gratifying-
surprising.
