i In consequence of the dismissal
of the negrQ troops in 'l'exas
there is much discussoin in rc-
gard to "pcaching" just at prc-
sent. 'rhe school boy who takcs

sociatcs , is condemncd-and
probably rightfully. 1.'hc man ,

" prits. A soldier is-in rcality-

i. peaceablc citizens arc wantonly
shot while sleeping , it would
: . seem to be oubly his dut.y to
I' assist in ferriting out the guilty , I
' ; . instead f shicldin tlem ! by the

to "peach. " His o11.th and ob-
. o t ligation to his country both dc-
mand this course. The same ac-
I tion would have been taken had
; ' ! these beeu white troops. The
' , l > resident should be commended
for his justicr and fearlessness
, in upholding the duty due trom
every man in this govcrnltlent-
: , r of. assisting in putting down
cnme.
While it is desirable to build
r up Amcrican shipping , ' i.t is
hoped that the president and his
aGvisors can discover some way
I this without - '
to do bring-ing'
: SQverc retaliatory measures fr m
! other nations whose commercial
: relations may be curtailed by he
reaching out of this country for
the trade which in reality should
belong to this country.
It would seem as if this government -
ment w uld have some right to
enforc treaty obligations with
Japan-even if San Francis o
docs object thereto. . There is
evidently some fun ahead , as the. .
south fears this is the opening i
wedge to prcvcnt thcre being
separate schools for the whites
and blacks in that s ction of the
country.
Senaton and Land Fraud. , .
The startling revelations of
tbe Wyoming land frauds threaten -
en to im'olve at least two United
States senators , prominent officials -
als of the general land office and
other well known men. Millions
of dollars are at stale and the
Interstate Commerce commission
has secured , d ring its hearing
of the cases , testimony enough
to supply many great law suits ,
but the most absorbing feature
of the situation to those whose
interests are not directly involved
is with regard to Scnators Clark
and Warren who are said to be
implicated in the coal land raft
which has resulted in tbe President -
dent recommending that the
coal lands be perman < ! ntly withdrawn -
drawn from settlement. Senators -
tors Clark and Warren , particu.
larly the latter'have been held in
high regard , and the announcement -
ment that they were involved in
the land scandal has been un-
wil ingl' accepted 1y many of
tbelr fellow Senators and friends
outside. When tbe rumor first
became public a prominent Sena.
tor threw up bis hands and ex.
claimed : "Great Heavens , what t
'is the Senate coming to anyway.
Pretty soon it will be looked up'
pen as a disgrace to be in the
Senate and people will avohl
spealdng to a Senator on 'the
street for fear of being liable tc
the deduction that 'birds of a
feather flock together. ' "
