Gifting Takes A
Step Forward
With Footwear
New Casuals Join~
Bedroom Slippers As
Yule Presents
Buying slippers for Dad or
Mother, or the children, or a
friend, is a time-honored Christ
mas tradition, but this year smart
shoppers are going a step further
by including a pair of fashion
ably new casuals among their
gifts.
The reasons are clear.
For the first time in nearly a
generation, men’s footwear has
been radically restyled, with the
result that casual shoes most as
suredly enter the gift category.
This applies to boys, too.
And as for the feminine side
of the family, it is even simplerj
to find the gay and glamorous “at
home” shoes that will bringi
squeals of pleasure from the
girls.
Soft suede in delicate colors,
smooth and crushed grain leath
ers. glittering silver and gold
leathers, all have been worked
into luxurious glamour shoes for
wear while hostessing, viewing
T-V or just lounging around.
Although normally you might
never think of buying father a
pair of shoes as a gift, the new
loafers will strike you as perfect
as a present for him. So will the
new low cut, one and two eyelet
models done in leathers soft to
the touch, available in myraid
colors such as bambaa, smoke,
butternut, sorrel tan and of
course black.
There are literally hundreds of
different styles of leather bed
room slippers to choose gifts from
for all members of the family.
They range from soft leather
scuffs and mules for Mother and
the teen-agers to the more con
ventional leather opera slippers
for Dad. Or the warm-as-toast
slippers lined in genuine wool
14th when they will play the Flor
ence Lions. Some of the outstand
ing players on the Kellom teams
are Valdora Johnson, Velma John
son and JoAnn Whitley.
shearling for all members of the
family.
Shearling, if you don’t know,
is the soft underwool of the
sheep or lamb, which has been
left on the leather as it is tan
ned, and results in the warmest,
most comfortable cold weather
footwear this side of the North
Pole.
Gay Wrappings,
Must For
Christmas Gifts
Presents To Be Sent
Through Mail Nee^
Special Care
Gay colorful wrappings are a
must for Christmas gifts—even
those to be mailed. But for mail
ing purposes, you’ll need special
designs that won’t get crushed.
The answer to this problem is
to use colored gift wrap tapes.
These tapes can be arranged in
a variety of designs that will be
easy to cover for mailing.
Besides an assortment of color
ed tapes, you’ll need white or
colored shelf paper (less expen
sive than wrapping paper), trans
parent tape and a pair of scis
sors.
Cutouts from last .year’s greet
ing cards are helpful to add a
few decorative touches.
Gifts may be wrapped in col
orful Christmas papers or in plain
shelf paper first. It’s best to re
wrap the decorated package in
the shelf paper before finally
treating it for mailing. On the
other hand, if first wrapped in
shelf paper, gift wrap tapes can
be used for applying myraid dec
orative designs.
Transparent cellophane tape can
also be used in a number of
ways to create unusual patterns.
For a glamorous effect, try dip
ping the sticky side of the tape
in gold or silver flitter and tape
this around your package.
Even salt, tapioca or ornament
“snow” crystals can be applied to
the sticky side of tape in the same
way.
Toothpicks, colored straws and
any other colorful items you
might have around the house can
be taped directly on the package
to form original motifs.
Gifts for mailing out of town
should be mailed about four
weeks before Christmas. Cush
ion breakable items with excel
sior or shredded paper.
An inner wrapping of corru
gated paper gives extra insurance
for packages marked “fragile.”
For the outer wrapping use heavy
brown paper or a corrugated car
ton, as needed. Tie these with
six-ply twine, doubling it for
greater safety.
To keep the paper in place
while you’re tying it, fasten first
with some cellophane tape.
It’s also a good idea to use
tape on the corners of the pack
age to prevent the twine from
cutting into the outer wrapping.
Tax Figuring
Time Will
Come Soon
Records Should Be
Gotten Into Shape
Within A Few Weeks
Time is getting short to plan
your farm income and expenses
for income tax and social security
purposes in 1955, remind agricul
tural economists at the Univer
sity of Nebraska.
With income reduced by
drought and low prices, some Ne
braska farmers reporting their in
come on the cash basis may want
to consider postponing some farm
expenses until after the first cf
the year.
If your net income is such that
you won’t have to pay any in
come tax, postponing some farm
expenses to 1956 may help reduce
your taxes next year, they ex
plain. Also, you may want to sell
some crops and livestock this
year instead of next if price con
ditions are favorable.
A little figuring and planning
now could save a lot on your taxes
next year.
The economists also say that
[farmers near the retirement age
of 65 will find it to their advan
tage to try for a net income as
j close to S4200 as possible. This
will build up your credit for so
[rial security retirement payments
Remember, though, that while
net income up to $4200 is count
ed for social security benefits, net
A Festive Dessert Need Not Be Heavy
How often have you blessed your thoughtful hostess for serving
a light dessert at the end of a hearty holiday meal? When you
want to be praised for serving a dessert that is festive, yet light,
try this one.
Delicious Eggnog Tapioca Cream, topped with bits of green and
red candied fruit, is in the holiday mood, yet it meets the need of so
many who do not care for heavy desserts.
Eggnog Tapioca Cream

3 tablespoons sugar
1 cup light cream
li teaspoon nutmeg £
t 1 tablespoon sherry or
,i sherry extract
BeatjOgg whites until foaniy throughout; add 2 tablespoons BUgar,
1 tabloufcoon at a time, and continue beating with rotary beater until
mixtuij^will stand in soft peaks. Set aside.
Mix tgg yolks with cup of the milk in saucepan. Add quick
cooking tapioca, salt, 3 tablespoons sugar, cream, ana remaining milk.
Place over medium heat. Cook until mixture comes to a boil, stirring
constantly—this takes 5 to 8 minutes.
Pour small amount of hot tapioca mixture gradually on beaten
egg whites, blending well. Then quickly add the remaining mixture,
stirring constantly. (The hotter the tapioca and the faster it is
blended in, the thicker and fluffier the pudding will be.) Add nutmeg
and sherry. Cool, stirring once after 15 to 20 minutes. Chill. Serve
plain or sprinkle with nut meats, shaved chocolate, additional
nutmeg, or diced candied fruit. Makes 5 or 6 servings.

New Gift Games Featuring Fun
For The Whole Family
mmmmmm—mmrn ■
This Christmas the four to six
year old contingent will be
counted in on the fun of playing
games, along with their older
brothers and sisters.
There’s a strong trend in games
that adapts competitive family
fun over board games to fit the
limitations of the kindergarten
crowd, catering to the recreation
al needs of the increasing num
ber of families with three and
four children.
Annie Oakley, for example,
makes competitive family fun
out of Wild West adventures,
slanted to a four to 12 age group.
Candyland, another favorite for
family fun that gives the kinder
garten crowd a chance to play in
stead of kibitzing, bases moves
on color. Chuggedy Chug, an
ingenious new board game, keys
competition to maneuvering lo
comotives to a round house which
revolves just like the real ones.
New game offerings give a big
assist to the school set too. Typi
cal of the trend to make acquisi
tion of knowledge a by product
of competitives fun is Go to the
Head of the Class, a quis game
played at three levels of diffi
culty, so that all the family par
ticipates in brain teasing compe
tition.
l here s a strong revival of in
terest noted in high finance
games. Easy Money, for example,
bases competition on sharp spec
ulative practices in trading real
estate. There are new games
based on stock market operations
and one that ties into the urani
ium seeking fever, providing play
ers with miniature geiger count
ers. Family concern with current
events is catered to with news
caster Swayze’s board game based
on international time clocks and
keyed to the news of the hour.
Traffic safety has inspired a
number of new games. Drive
Ur-Self, for example, bases play

players with a real steering wheel
which maneuvers a car, a horn
and a set of proper road rules.
