Miss Rhapsody
BLUES SINGER BELIEVES 1
NEW DAY COMING FOR
PROFESSION
Miss Rhapsody Talks About Life
In Interview
—by DOLORES CALVIN—
New York (CNS) One of the
greatest of women blues singers,
Jersey-born Miss Rhapsody, is look
ing for a new day in her profession.
For right now, the race conscious
lady freezes when people “type" fern
blues singers as vulgar, cheap, cuss
ing pistol packin' mamas who live the
lives offstage of the women they sing
about.
She hopes that presently the public
will give an artist her recognition
when she chirps blue notes ^ at the !
mike and let her walk off the stage!
into her own private life, without be
ing "classed” for the songs she has
just sang.
“Of course, part of the fault lies
not only on the public, but on the art
ist herself’, the browr.skin blues spec
-ialist emphasized as she pointed a
warning finger in the 42nd Street of
fice of her manager, Bill Graham.
“But, I'd like to see them dress better
walk more gracefully, and for heav
en's sake," she added in all frank
ness, “Stop hanging around bars.”
That brings down the character of
us all”!
Feels the Blues ..._
Rhapsody feels the blues; . .she's
been selling them .for years- Her
life story is simple. As Viola Wel
les. he went to ive with her grand
mother near Smifhfield. Virginia at
her mother's death. There, she lusd
a chcir in the bam and played .the
piano at T. ack in Newark, she sang
at a Presbyterian church .choir yd
years- It teas because she strung
rhapsodies and ballads that she teas
tagged Miss Rhapsody in 1932 at
Chester, Pa...
Now Rhapsody lives in Newark
with her guitarist husband, a recent
ly discharged Sargeant from the ar
my and their T year old daughter,
Yvonne- She says the youngster is
a “natural” at dancing and hopes she
will eventually get into show business
At home, blue notes disappear for
gaiety. Rhapsody insists she ran out
cook the best French chef and decor
ate cakes like a ezferan. When she's
I not in an apron, she’s making her
| own gowns for stage wear. Her lat
\ est is a black sequined number and
she put on each sequote herself
Miss Rhapsody lit a cigarette Ashe
rarely smokes- and talked about her
new records “Bye, Bye Baby Blues"
and “My Lucky Day” both written by
her.
Then, quite by accident, she gave
us a clue to her fuccess- She gets
blue in spirit when singing the blues:
her tones are sad and her eyes clos
ed- She thinks of herself as a ser
vant to her public, trying to satisfy
their hunger for her kind of music.
And, from what we concluded, she
pleases them!
