OUR DEMOCRACY
by Myrtle M. Goodlow
We are proud to be,
Members of the race
Abraham Lincoln freed from
slavery
We have never betrayed the
trust
He placed in us
And when he set us free
Laid the foundation
For America to become a
powerful nation
And the true leader of dem
ocracy.
Today the spirit of Lincoln is
Because the race he freed
grieved,
Has to beg and plead
For equal rights to fight
For the Stars and Stripes
To help preserve the freedom
he gave
his life for—
And the principles he stood for
Grieved—because our country
The Land of our birth,
Refuses to accept us at God’s
true worth.
And refuses to hear our plea
For justice and liberty.
And yet other nation’s now
would free—
In the name of liberty.
America and Britain are in ti'e
same shoes,
Inasmuch as both refuse
To grant the darker races
An equal chance—
Has hindered their own ad
vance—
America... .tbe Negro
And Britain her darker colonies
And the facts they now must
face,
China one of our allies,
Belongs to the yellow race
And the darker races will b<
drawn in
The world wide struggle to lose
or win—
As we face, the Axis
And the Rising Sun.
It’s up to America and Britain.
{ Whether the war is lost or won.

a very fine fellowship for a few
moments, as he informed us that
Mr. Hill and Mr. Earl Copeland
were taking good care of the room
service in an up and go move

on the job right up to the minute.
We Hope tjie boys will keep the
good work up.

Spots on February 15th and it
was a pleasure to meet Mr. Earl

not have another attack of illness.
We also met Mr. Frank Buford at

are quite sure the headwaiter Mr.

HOUSEWIVES URGED TO
CARE FOR APPLIANCES
Omaha homemakers are urged
by Metropolitan District officials
to take good care of their gas
appliances War time scarcity of
steel and other metals makes it
important that present appliances
be kept in service for a longer per
iod than normally.
The Servel gas refrigerator is
extremely long lasting, due to
fact that it has no moving parts,
and with reasonable care even mi
nor repairs are hardly ever need
ed. Follow manufacturer’s instruc
tions in caring for this appliance.
Automatic gas water heaters,
properly adjusted, will last for
years without attention. It is a
good practice to drain off a bucket
cr so of hot water directly from
the valve on the lower part of the
tank about once every two weeks.
This flushes out sediment from th
bottom of the tank, keeps the hot
water clear, and prevents excess
ive tank corrosion.
With ordinary care a Gas Range
will give many years of faithful
efficient cooking service. Here
are a few simple suggestions that
will add extra years to the usefu'
life of your gas range:
1. CARE OF BURNERS—Re
move and clean top burners once
a. week. Brush or wipe off accuir
1 ulaUd dirt. If absolutely jieces
sary, scrub burners with hot "^ar
suds. BUT BE SURE TO HOI.D
PORTHOLES DOWN SO NO WA
TI'.R OR SOAP GETS ON IN
SIDE OF BURNER DRY
iHOROUGHLY BEFORE RE
PLACING IN RANGE If port
holes are clogged .open with a
piece of wire or a st. '.I' nail.
2. GENERAL CLEANING -
Clean your range freq ic it'y This
inc udes clean oui pa..- oven and
brc ’er (if 1 se’ *, and pircelain.
* • *! a clear, .lamp, warn U^th to
t:< k n porcelain. Do ot use rlea" 1
ing powder on white porcelain Do
not set hot nook'oif vessels on por
celain cooking top.
3. CARE OF OVEN—Leave
oven door open for 3 minutes after
oven is used_prevents rusting
of oven lining and racks.
4. BURNER . ADJUSTMENTS
—Do not attempt to adjust burn
ers, valves or oven control. If
adjustment is needed, gas odors
are noticed, or pilot light goes out

DETROIT HOUSING FIGHT
FLARES UP AGAIN; '
(Continued from page i)
PWA.
Immediately upon calling the
meeting to order, Mr. Snyder in a
very terse statement, for which he
later apologized because he under
stood that the delegates had felt
he was being rude and discourt
eous, declared that the houses un
der discussion would remain vac
ant until the controversy concern
ing them subsided.
Upon making his statement,
which included other remarks con
cerning ‘pressure groups’ to whicK
he would not yield, Mr. Snyder a- j
bruptly left the meeting.
This acted as a match to th?
torch, for the meeting almost got
•ut of control. Rev. Horace White
brought about some semblance of
order and asked the delegates to
hold their tempers.
Shortly afterward Snyder return
-ed, it is said at the instance of
Senator Prentiss Brown of Michi
gan, who insisted that the delegat
es be treated with common decen
cy and courtesy.
Snyder then took his position on
the platform and offered a weak
apology, but remained adamant in
his decision that neither white nor
colored should occupy the houses.
This, he said, was in disagreement
with the opinion of Coordinator
Palmer, who in his turn said that
Adaptable Laxative
is Popular!
Laxatives, like people, are quit' 5
different. Some are quick, some
are strong, some are gentle. Pop
ular ones among them must have
something of all three qualities,
and be adaptable to individual
needs.
Adaptable BLACK-DRAUGHT
has been popular with four gt>ne
ations of Americans. This spicy,
aromatic powder may be taken dry '
followed by water, or made into a
tea. Either way, it is easy to take
and you regulate the strength to
suit your needs.
And either way, you get the lull
benefit of a “tonic-laxative” herb
in BLACK-DRAUGHT that helps
to tone lazy intestinal muscles.

“CROSSES"
by Myrtle M. Goodlow
On God’s eternal word I stand
And guided by His hand—
I'll lift the cross of His dear Son
Until my life on earth is done.
And through His mighty power
In this our trying hour,
Lift the problems of my race
Upheld by God’s own grace—
“The Cross of the Klu Klux
Klan—
Is a burning cross of shame!
To every true American
Who bears the name
And America is to blame—
For letting the Klu Klux Klan
Use its cross of shame
To strike terror in the hearts
of any group or man,
Who bears her name.
For the cross of the KKK is
unholy, unAmerican—
The old world suffered a ter
rible loss,
Through Hitler’s crooked cross
The emblem of prejudice and
hate,
With ruin in its wake!
There is just one cross,
That stands for justice and
right.
And that is the radiant cross
of Christ,
That can turn this world dark
ness into light
And shall forever shine,
And lead men aright!
Until the end of time
Other crosses will someday fall
But the cross of our Blessed
Christ,
The Saviour of us all.
Shall stand when this old world
is gone,
When God’s Eternal Day shall
dawn
The cross of Christ shall be,
God’s children’s guarantee—
Of life throughout eternity!
Oh! war torn world which shall
it be?
The cross of Christ that leads
to life and light,
OR a crooked cross or a flam
ming one—
That leads to death and des
truction,
In this world and in the world
to come!
"Uncle Sam” an anonomity, had
made the mistake in the first place
by not consulting the wishes of che
people of Detroit.
Detroiters jumped all over the
floor in efforts to be recognized
by the chairman. But they all
seemed defnitely incensed at Sny
der’s attitude.
“When I am convinced I am
wrong, I have the courage to
change my mind”, the PWA offic
ial said, but it was evident that all
was not well, even when he again
said, "I made a real mistake when
I called this a pressure group".
Representatives of the AFL.
brought a mesage from William
Green, persident of the internat
ional body, sustaining the colored
folk in their fight.
Telegrams had been sent to out
standing Negroes asking their
presence t° assist in the fight.
These included James E. Scott,
Judge Armond Scott, Dr. Emmett
J. Scott, Judge William C. Huea
ton, all of whom were present and
William Trent, director of racial
relations of the PWA.
