THE GREAT CHARTER
by Ruth Taylor
One drowsy summer afternoon
In England, driving through the
quiet countryside down winding
country roads, through leaf roi
fed lanes, past green fields and
little villeges clustered around
old stone church, we came to a
meadow beyond which the great
waters of the Thames sparkled
under the late afternoon sun. My
said quietly and almost reveren
tly - “This is Runnymede.” In
stantly straightened up from my
comfortable position in the car,
for “Runnymede” deeply stirred
my emotionh as I though of whatt
it meant to America and Ameri
cans.
Many if the quiet villages
through which we had passed are
piles of crumbled stones. The
grey churches are but mashes of
rubble—their altars open ti the
heavens in mute appeal. Today
the fields are furrowed to prevent
the landing of hostile planes. *The
roads are barricaded with barbed
companion ^topped the cair and
wire. Today the silver blue ribbon
of the Thames is a treachedous
guide to (the enemy from the sky.
But Runnymede is imperishable
ti every Britain—and to every
American. Bombs cannot hurt it,
nor devastation of war dim its
glory, for there the Magna Chart
—Ithe Great Charter of England—
was signed. Runnymede was the
real cradle of those Anglo Saxon
liberties which are our proudest
heritage.
More than seven centuries ago
on this lush meadow the Great
Charter was wrested from King
John by the Barons, the Church
and the citizens of London acting
together. The principal objects of
the Charter were to ‘‘restrict the
power of Ithe King to demand and
obtain armed service from nobility
and commons; to e,nd the sale, de
nial and delay of justice; to pro
tect life, liberty, and property from
arbitrary forfeiture and seizure;
to prevent the imprisonment of an
individual except after due trial
and judgment by his peers, and last
but by no means least, was a pro
vision appointing twenty-five bar
ons conservators of the public
liberties and granting them the
right to War on the King for a
violation of the Great Charter.'’
Often misinterpreted, often badly
carried out, it nevertheless be
came Ithe basis of the struggle for
English liberty from which came
the gradual granting of our com
mon law.
Today the Magna Charta rests
safely in Washington to remain
there for the duration of the war.
While it ih our guest, as it was
our inspiration, let us not forget
the great principles for which it
stands. It calls to us in the name
of all those who fought and sacri
ficed and struggled for the liberties
we prize, ito support to. the best
of our ability the fight for free
dom and liberty for all meh, of
all races and creeds and color
throughout the world.

The Lesson, “John Urges Chris
tian Love." God is love, is the
greatest sentence man ever ut
tered. We know that God is love
because of what he has done and
is doing for mankind.
11 o’clock we was blessed with
a message by sister Gladys Cro
mer of Kansas City taken from St.
John 15-8. Christians must bear
much fruit.
We was grateful! to have Elder
and sister Gladys Cromer to con
duct a short series of meeting on
their return home, from Lincoln,
Nebraska, wfeere they were en
gaged in a two weeks Revival.
We receivd much encouragement
from the Lord through them. Our
hearts was made to rejoice, and to
press on to higher heights in the
Lord.
