RACE PREJUDICE By John Mills (Continued) I could not dispute him as there was a Negro paper pub lished in a town not fifteen miles away that made a com mon practice of of using a small “n“ in the word Negro, and the editor of the Negro paper claim ed that he used high school boys and they were reckless or did not know any better than not tlo capitalize tfhe word.A large eastern publishing house reieasted a “WcaUd's Encyc® pedia.“ Capitalization of the word Negro was omitted entire ly. I communicated with the publishers, and they agreed with me that the word should be capitalized, and promised to rectify the error and capitalize the word in the future. Not many months ago, I was turned down flat by the local of a powerful National labor organization. The constitution of this organization prohibits Negro membership in white lo cals. I belonged to the ostracize " race. I communicated with high government officials, also the head of the A. F. of L, and the grand lodge officials of this lo cal. I received answers to my letters, all of which made me realize that I was up against a stone wall. This local, luckily, is composed of intelligent and far seeing men—men of viston. They saw the futility of their efforts to attain a fuller eco nomie life, and readily saw and knew from experience the un certainty of achieving their de sires by leaving such a huge ‘loophole for their downfall as denying membership of a white race of people to their organi zation; consequently they got busy and received permission to lower their racial bar. I am not saying this in a boastful manner, nor do I wish to convey the idea that I have the nature of a braggadocia, when I state that it was through my efforts that the Omaha lo ! eal of the above mentioned or ganization received permission to lower its racial bar. All. per sons of color in Council Bluffs and Omaha are now eligible !to join these local unions of this particular organization of Com Slvter Ice & Coal Co No extra char pea on half tons of coal. I am ^quoting these events with but one object in view, and that is to try and show these intellect oal color idolize re a few race injustices that have been cor rected by the efforts of one de scendant of Ham or a Hameri can who has not any color pre jod^oe to weaken his race con sciousness or race pride. If the thonsands of college graduates and intellectuals would g,et a little more race con sciousness and. race pride, they could, by using proper methods, change the attitude and opinion of millions of Nordic Americans towards their race. You color prejudiced de— scendants of Ham, or Hameri cans must surely know that while you are practicing color prejudice and discrimination a mong fltour race, 'the NordSc American, as a whole, looks down upon you as you look up on the different colors of your race with the only exception i that all .the Nordic American wants to disc^ern is a trace of “Ham“ in you and he has a thought for you, whether you be light or black; and that is an inferior thought in regard to yon. If you tre on intelect ual, he just handles the idea diplomatically different than if you were just a hod carrier, but nevertheless he does not consider you the equal of his kind. It is sad, but true, that ,the boisterous, loudmouthed, cring ing, inferior acting, grammar killing members of tbe race, are' a very powerful force which mokes the average Nordic Am eriean look upon the mass, in eluding you and Mr. and' Mrs. or Miss color idolizer, as some tiling inferior to him and his kind.
