FILE CHARGES
AGAINST COP
Miami, Fla., Oct. 24 (By Rich
ardson for ANP)—“Yes, I carried
two guns when I was in ‘Nigger
town’.” With this illuminating de
claration of the police department’s
attitude toward the taxpaying re
sidents of Miami’s colored section,
a special member of the local force
added damaging testimony in the
easo against four policemen who
'are facing ouster proceedings- Am
ong tho crimes attributed to the
quartett are charges of brutally
beating Mack Williams, a Negro,
and nearly putting out one of his
eyes
The ouster proceedings against
the men—one of them was former
ly a chief of detectives—has been
gr'o■; an for several days. The test
imony of Williams in the hearing
was heard early in the week, and
was the center of a concerted at
tack by attorneys for both the ac
cused policemen an the city offici
als seeking to oust them- Several
times the prosecutor declared that
“I don’t want to be placed in the
position of defending this Negro-”
Luther Collins, the white “speci
al investigator” who “carried two
guns In nigger-town,” admitted on
the stand that he was employed
for several months as a bodyguard
for a wealthy Negro named Dor
sey. Dorsey was recorded as “that
rich nigger front north Miami” by
attorneys in the hearing
In spite of testimony of several
witnesses that Williams was brutal
ly manhandled in the Miami jail by
four policemen, no action against
them has been taken to date

dom,” were refused registration for

where the heavenly names were
booked for the record. The Divine
ltes turned the police station into
a “Peace Mission” with singing and
shouting. They were to be tried in
