This disease causes about one-seventh of the deaths in the human family. It occurs in sever al forms, but the one in which the lungs are affected Is the most common. No age, race, or sex is immune from tuberculosis at tacks. In the United States there is more than $22,000,000 spent alone in the campaign each year for the prevention of this terrible disease. In average ages there are nearly a hundred thousand victims; four fifths die of lung, or pulmonary tuberculosis. In years these fig ures have decreased as compared to those in previous years. One of the most important sources of infection is the sputum of tuberculosis victims. It is usu ally carried about in the air by dust, and taken into the nose and air tubes, and from there Into the lungs by the act of breathing. Milk and meat of tubercular cat tle are other agents, in spreading the disease. Certain habits and living conditions which lower the vitality and make the body less resistent to disease may cause predisposition to tuberculosis. Im pure air, lack of nourishing food, over-crowded living and sleeping rooms, excessive indulgence in liquor, and other forms of dissi pation, overwork and worry are other weakening habits which cause tuberculosis. In 1882 Dr. Robert Koch proved that tuberculosis was caused by a single microscopic organism, which he named the tubercle bacillus. Koch proved also that the disease could be spread only by the transmission of this germ from person to person. With the enemy at last in the open so that science knew what it was fight ing there remained only the dis covery of a medicine or serum to cure it. Some of the greatest minds in the world have applied themselves to this problem in the laboratory. So far the effort has not been successful. Meanwhile other methods of curing the dis ease have been sought and in the Sponsored and Supported by Public Spirted Northside Business Men for the Purpose of Creating Better Understanding Between Merchants and Consumers an dfor the Purpose of Bringing Dircetly to You the Latest Price Quotations Skilled Workers Find That WPA Promises Empty New York, Dec. 21.—Promise of WPA Administrator Victor F. Ridder to end discrimination against Negroes on work relief is still just a whiff of hot air, judg ing from practices carried on by the WPA re-Rating Board at 16th Street and Eighth Avenue. Skilled workers, waiting for board examination said that dis crimination is still rife. They complained that they were given slips to fill out at home instead of being examined on the spot. One mechanic who applied for reclassification said, “All the jobs will be gone before we get the silps filled out at home and then mailed back.” Others charged the Emergency Relief Bureau with aiding in dis crimination. Skilled workers, they stated, are classified as laborers by the ERB, and the WPA, fol lows the recommendations of the ERB and places them on laborers’ jobs. name of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau stands at the top. His method of treating tuberculosis with quiet, rest in bed, good food, fresh air and the supervision of an experienced physician has proved the only successful method of cure. It is the method today and many lives have been saved by it. Tuberculosis is still the leading cause of death between the ages of 15 and 45. The important facts about the disease so far as you and I are concerned, are that no specific cure is known for it, and that once it attacks a person the treatment takes a long time and therefore costs a large amount of money. Your best pro tection against it and mine is to avoid getting it. The Nebraska Tuberculosis As sociation is now conducting its an nual Christmas Seal Campaign. The funds realized from the sale will be used to prevent further spread of the disease in our com munity. Remember that every case of tuberculosis comes from another. No home will be safe from it un til all homes are safe. As you know the Nebraska Tuberculosis Association informs the public of the facts about it and discovers active coses while they are still in the early and curable stages so that effective treatment may begin promptly. Christmas Seals cost only one penny each, but the power of the penny is accumulated between "Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Through these pennies the Association carries on its work for the entire year. If you do n o t remember any thing else I have said on this pro gram I ask you to remember at least this sentence: “Buy Christ mas Seals and help Fight Tuber culosis in Omaha.” Greetings of the Season To Our Many Friends MR. The Union, whose members in clude the best known writers In France, originated in a five-day Congress last June. Langston Hughes, famous American author and president of the League of Struggle for Negro Rights, was then elected as a delegate from America. At the first session, the world famous Negro writer, Rene Maran, whose novel “Batouala" was awared a literary prize, spoke of the “importance” of colonial possessions to French big businesses. Colonization, he said, has been pushed ahead with im mense exploitation. Equality has not been granted to colonials Maran declared, but instead, France was falling into jingo nationalism. If C.O.D. postage extra ( ) | Virgin Island Women Win Right To Vote St. Thomas, V. I., Dec. 28, (ANP)—For the first time in the history of the Virgin Islands, women will be entitled to vote when election day comes around again, in September, 1936, accord ing to a ruling just handed down by Judge Albert Levitt, white, the new Judge of the District court. Perhaps the only land under the American flag with the ballot still restricted to men, the island’s sit uation was due to the stipulation of the old Danish Colonial law which still is supreme here, some times sharing, sometimes negat ing, the American Constitution Judge Levitt, when faced with the question, in the Francis Libel Case, ruled that the Danish law as enforced was contrary to the 19th amendment of the U. S. Constitution. Without declaring the whole code unconstitutional, however, he interpreted the word “man,” to mean females also, thus making the letter of the Danish law to agree in spirit with the Constitution. As the law still stands, no very large number of Virgin Islands women will win the right to vote, since every voter here must show that he earns at least $300 annu ally. Many people here do not handle that much actual cash dur ing the course of a year. How ever, in a comparative way, the new ruling is bound to bring about tremendous changes. The decision comes after sever al years of agitation among a militant minority of women here to be given equality with male voters. It will also mean that women will now be eligible for public office which they have not held before. The male electoral board is in a quandry and has not yet adjusted itself to what Judge Levitt’s decree means. GET MONEY—LOV I guarantee to help you *« a new •tart in life.
