Tel JA-7086 j ' Cathoics Ask Pope for His Position on Mussoli ni’s Attacks on Ethipia New York, (CNA)—Deep concern was expressed here by Catholic Cir cles over the continued silence of Pope Pius XI towards Mussolini’s plan for the enslavement of Christian Ethiopia. “Catholics, other denominations, urged condemnation fascist Italy in vasion Christian Ethiopia, await re ply”, was the text of the cable sent to the Vatican head by the Provision al Committee for the Defense of Eth iopia and the American League Against War and Fascism. Commenting on the tense situation in Ethiopia, Dr. Hudson Oliver, prom inent physician and evecutive com mittee member of the Catholic Inter Racial Association, flayed Mussolini’s foreign policy as “taking advantage of a weaker nation”. “I will join with any group pro testing this imperialist war”, he re marked. Police Attack Anti Mussolini Picket Line Detroit, Mich., (CNA)—Recklessly weilding clubs and blackjacks, the po lice tore into the picket line protest ing Mussolini’s robber war against Ethiopia in front of the Italian Con sulate and dispersed the demonstra tors. For over an hour, Negro and white paraded in front of the consulate with placards which read: “Hands off Ethiopia*” “Long Live the Italian Anti-Fascist Fighters”. Many pass ers-by voiced their sympathy with the picketers and protested vehement ly when the police charged the line. A delegation hadd by Edward Wil liams was refused admission into the Italian Consul’s office to lodge their protest. The demonstration was call ed by the Provisional Committee for ! the Defense of Ethiopia. Maryland Student Heads Anti-War Group Baltimore, Md., (CNA)—Donald Murray, young student who has just defeated the attempt of the Univers | ity of Maryland to bar him because he is Negro, has been elected chair man of the arrangements committee of the Baltimore Conference Against War and Fascism. - --- Popuar Mortician on Tour J. D. Lewis, proprietor of the J. D. Lewis Mortuary, left a few days ago, accompanied by his mother and sis ter on a tour of the North West. They will spend a few days in Seattle, Washington and will motor down the coast, stopping at Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Calif They are expected to return home in the early part of August. PREXY PRESIDENT J. B. WATSON Head o f Agricultural, Me chanical and Normal college, located at Pine Bluff, Ark. Mr. Watson, who has been a wide ly known figure in America before assuming the presidency of Arkansas State, is develop ing a splendid institution. The institution is in a sense new. Every building on the grounds has l>een erected during the past six years. ANP Ministers Alliance Endorses Scottsboro Herdon Defense Buffalo, N. Y.—(CNA)—The Min isters Alliance of Buffalo and vicin ity representing a score of Negro •hurches, at its special meeting en dorsed the defense strugyles for the Scottsboro and Herndon. In answer to an appeal from the local Herndon, Scottsboro defense committee, the assembled ministers voted for a resolution of protest to be sent to ttie Supreme Court and Governor Talmadge of Georgia. The resolution asked that the frame-up charge against Herndon be dropped and that he be unconditionally re leased. Petition lists were eagerly taken by the ministers who promised to solicit signatures of the members of their : congregations to add their bit to the ; campaign for 2,000,000 signatures. Eight Little Letters If the late Frank Douglas could return now, he would be faced with eight little letters on each side of the door of his old stand, at 2406 Erskine street, and at the bottom of the large plate window he would see Erskine street Liq uor store. Very beautifully dec orated in colors for a place of this kind. The eight little letters on each side say, ess on one side and Cleo on the other side. These two names represent a long large ac quaintance on two diJfferent kinds of life endeavor. This is not Mr. Harding’s first venture into the business world. At one time he operated a large business in the “ Windy'' city. In his Chicago enterprise he employed only women workers. This may be the reason that he has only men employees in his place of busmess. Maybe Jess learned a lesson. Mr. Cleo Mortimer, who is the decorator ,and ever handy, man around the place of business known as H- and M., on 24th and Erskine, has lived in Omaha near ly al lhis life and chose as his vo cation interior decorating. Tihs gives Mr. Mortimer a large ac quaintance with plumbers, car penters, decoraters and helpers. He has a large following of ac quaintances in this circle. Mr. Mortimer has a stiring personal ity and is on the alert and strictly business. These two young men are destined to become a leading business organization of Omaha. If the separate liquor licence is upheld by State Supremt Court, the yare favored with a very fine suitable location for the double liquor law operation. In talking with Mr. Mortimer about the double liquor law, he says that he prefers the Attorney General’s opinion to be sustained by the State Supeme Court. Mr. Mort imer said that he would prefer running the two stores separate for there is a number of working people, whose day of liesure does not begin due to their employ ment until late in the evening, and that if the Attorney Gener al’s opinion is not sustained by State Supreme Court, the liquor licensed places of business will be forced to close at an early hour and that will cause a gxeat deal of inconveniences* for people whse working days do not let up until 1 lr 12 o’clock The H and M. seems t obe the popular place of recreation on 24th street of late. From 8:30 until about 2 the six employees are jumping high trying to meet the demand for service. Busy Pastor Rev. M. K. Curray. pastor of Zion Baptist church, ca ni>c seen every morning about 8:45 enroute to his study room, at Zion. .lust asdutiful as if he had to punch a [ time clock. He makes four trips a day from his home to his study room Rev. Curry is oved a*n d spoken favorably of by all who have had the pleasure of his ac quaintance, since he has been in our city. Even though the weath er is very warm, he has a packed auditorium every Sunday morn ing. It is filled to capacity.
