Lesson for May 20 THE FUTURE OF THE KINGDOM LESSON TEXT—Matthew 25:1-1*. GOLDEN TEXT—And the seventh angel soundgd; and there were great voice* in heaven, saying, The king doms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and aver. Rev. 11:15. PRIMARY TOPIC—A Story About a Wedding. JUNIOR TOPIC—When Jesus Comes. INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOP IC—Always Ready. YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOP IC—Christian Preparedness. This lesson Is part of the well known Olivet discourses giving a prophetic view of the course of time from the crucifixion to the second coming of Christ. Two great facts are before us In this prophetic utterance, the de struction of Jerusalem and the second coming of Christ.. The one was near, having taken [dace witlrin forty years from Christ’s crucifixion; the other is still future. The parable of the ten virgins is one of the two parables designed for the instruction of the saints in view of the coming of Christ, it has a con tinuous applicatiou in the present time (I Thess, 4 :lfi-18; Titus 2:11-13). I. The Equipment of the Virgin* (vv. 1-5). 1. The foolish virgins (v. 3.1 They took lamps hut had no oil with them. Lamps signify Christian profession (Matt. 5:10) and oil the Holy Spirit (Zech. 4). Having lamps hut no oil shows that they' were professors of religion without possessing its reality. The Christian life is sustained by tlie Holy Spirit. As soon ns one is re generated Hie Holy Spirit takes up his abode within him. The proof that one is a child of God is that he has the Holy Spirit dwelling within him (Horn. 8:9). 2. The wise virgins (v. 4). They possessed both lamps and oil. They made a profession and backed it with a life of real righteousness. These are the true believers. Roth the wise and the foolish virgins slumbered and slept. The common lot falls to both professing Christians and real Chris tians. They fell under the spell of sleep (v. 5). This shows that as this age lengthens the real and professing • church will cease looking for the coin ing of the Lord, it is unspeakably sad that so many, even of God’s saints— wise virgins—should give tip the ex pectancy of the return of Hie Lord. II. The Coming of the Bridegroom (vv. fi-12). 1. The midnight cry (v. fi). [n the midst of the night when all the vir gins were asleep the cry was made. ‘‘Ilehold the bridegroom rnmeth. go ye out to meet him.” Who knows but that the time of this cry is close at hand? 2. The activity of the virgins (v. 7) They all arose and trimmed their lamps. There will be great activity when the Wd gomes, .those who only make a profession then realizing that they lack what is essential to entrance • to the marriage feast. 3. The foolish request the wise to share their oil (vv. 8, 9). The revela tion of Christ wHl make manifest the genuineness of our religion and ex pose the foljf- of mere profession. When the Lord comes it will be too late to mend one's ways. I 4. The wise enter to the marriage (v. 10). It will matter little what else one has at that time if he has oil in his lamp. 5. The pitiful petition of the fool ish (v. 11). They begged the Lord to open the door that they might enter to the marriage feast. fi. Hie awful Judgment (v. 12). The Lord declared. "I know you not.” Hioae who put off personal contact with Christ until that day shall be shut out from his presence. III. The Solemn Obligation (v. 13). “Watch, for ye know not the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” 1. Entering with Christ to the mar riage depends not upon having pro fessed to enter the Christian race but continuing therein, it Is not enough that: we can refer to the lighting of our lamps. If oil and light be wanting when Christ comes there will be no admittance to the heavenly banquet, j t. Borrowed religion will not avail at that day. Association with the most eminent of God’s saints will not secure for us acceptance at that day. The essential thing is personal union with tike Lord Jesus Christ through faith In his shed blood. — ■1 1 Attend Some Church Every Sunday If you get any serv.ce of th*s ■ ■ Before you buy your household church directory write us a line or I § R I I TO R 0 O needs. ronsu!t the P**es of th«* °ma* fl—lllll I _ I I &■ ha Guide first- That will make your *°» We waut t0 . 11UI paper a bigper and better paper-.... For too many to try to recall, but one or two stood out more were that Motherhood is an accomplishment and must be achieve by doing something real for human kind and the love and prayer ©f the real Mother can play great part in making the world just what it should be- It is hoped that the many good thoughts yill live in the hearts of those who heard them The auditorium was filled. Sterling. “SAFETY FIRST” By Rev. F. P. Jones, Pasior of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church i any that will come alter me, let him deny himself Matt. 16:24 1. These words of Jesus do not ean occasional act ol self--denial,temporary fac s, sell-imposed moment of hardship- They moan a, total repudiation of sen as the bject ot love, an unconditional surrender of self as the first object of consideration. As such, no Chris ian can ever adopt the maxim, “Take care of Number One, unless he makes Christ Number One. “Safety First” ay be a very good motto if only we can define safety right. Whose safVy? Certainly not ours. The safety of society, the safety of others, the safety of the Kingdom of Hod. He who pu s anything first is reversing the Christian order. 3. Is it possible to modify the tendency ©f haiman* nature so as to set up another personality than our own “Number One?” Of course it is possible. When a man marries, if he is has a worthy idea of marriage, he shifts his lqyalty from his own personality to that of anothed (Wife)- Every mother knows 'his exxperience. The whole philosophy of selfishness is shattered by the sight of a baby’s face, nay, by the first thought of its lit'le life, so dependent, yet so Devine. 4. This is the program of tne Christ life; Self de throned, Christ enthroned, and than the adoption by us of Christ’s own s andard of values. We must c re for the things He cared for. We must make supreme the things which he made supreme. We all must admit that this old world in which we live changed the philosophy of 'he life which Christ taiught and lived, to the one self-centered committee of three “I, Mysdlf, and Me.” But remember, my friend, ‘here is o other standard, no other philosophy of life out side of Christ. He is the only “Code” the only “Safety First” may be a very good motto if only not? The call is to ‘he whosoever will. * * * * * Anna Cook, Carrie Davis, Mrs Theo dora Cunningham and Mrs- Ethel Ruf at Some of our visitors introduced were RRev and Mrs- Nathaniel Jeltz, Mr- M- E- Bryant, son of Rev- Bryant, our pastor, Mrs- Theodore Cunning ham, Mrs. Jean Wilier and many other to numerous to name- Visitors are always wecofme to St. John St. Benedict’s Church 2423 Grant Street RevFr. The invited guest of Elder Lucy Smith. Misanthropy By R. A. ADAMS (For The Literary Service Bureau) A glaringcase of inconsistency is that reported in recent press dis patches- The ireport is thiat the head of the Reynolds Tobacco Com pany gave a lrge portion of the half mllioi. dollars used in building the St- Paul’s Cathedral at Winston-Sa lem, North Carolina. This company sells tobacco. Especially does it sell “Camels” in the advertising of which millions of dollars are spent to “ed ucate women” to the use of tobacco These people know, or should that tobacco is injurious; that it injures young people, especially; that smok ing s degrading to womanhood. So, seems that there is effort to ajv pease conscience or palliate the ser ious offense against soeil good, by giving a part of the destructive money to the church Actions like this increase scepti cism and weaken the faith of many persons in the virtue of religion and in the sincerity of those who profess it- This case is in line with the action of the Duke Tobacco Company in giving educational institutions a share of its “Bull Durham” profit. But this is far from the principle of the religion of Jesus which forbid hurting another- It is out of har mony with “The Golden Rule,” “What soever you would that men should do unto you, do ye unto them-” I would add that in accepting such gifts,.the church and the educational institutions condone and encourage the hypocrisy which such actions mani fest Concience and Cowards By R. A- ADAMS (nuaung aouuag Aiuiatiq aqj, joj) If “conscience doth make cowards of us all," It is because we would not heed the call To do the right, but with the heedless throng. Pursued the path ■which we knew was wrong. If we do right, the path of right pursue, Do with our might what is our task to do We shall be brave, having no guilty fear Because ’tis ours to boast a conscience clear. j So, to have peace let it be understood. Means we must live as duty bids we should If good or ill the world shall re compense And boast “ a conscience void of all offense With “conscience void of all offense” shall we From fear retribution them be free.
