Conrad up to his old tricks of knocking them over as he runs. At the right, Tick Coleman, Lion quarter, is making

FORGETFUL
While a friend was calling on
me, I me: tioned that my husband
and I were going to take a roast
chicken as part of our lunch when
we went to the beach the next Sun
day. She exclaimed that that
would taste very delicious by the
sea. Noting her enthusiasm, I told
her we would take her along with
us. When Sunday came, however.
I forgot all about my invitation. A
few days later, when I saw her
again, i started to tell her about
our trip to the beach. When I
finished she informed me that she
h d stayed hi me all that Sunday
morning expecting us to call for
her! B. Y.

A COME-BACK
I had such a cold that I could
hardly talk above a whisper. It
happened that we were having an
oral test in a class in arithmetic.
I did not even bother to figure out
the answers to the questions, as I
knew I could not speak distinctly.
Consequently, when the teacher
called on me, I answered: “I can't
talk because I have such a cold.”
To whiith my teacher replied quite
sharply: ‘‘The answer would have
been much shorter than that re
mark!” A. M.
Erosion Threatens
Cut in Acre Yields
Lower crop yields per acre with
resulting higher production costs
are among the chief dangers of
land erosion, says the United States
Department of Agriculture. This
process is already under way, the
department says.
Erosion is being checked in many
parts of the United States through
terracing, sodding, and similar
practices. Work of the United
States Department of Agriculture
proves that excessive erosion can
be controlled.

Warns Against Use of
Fake Malaria “Cures”
Fake malaria cures have given
government food and drug official
trouble for me e than LQ years, ac

Distributed largely in the Southern
states, many have been manufac

borders of a single state, so as to
a oid Federal iurisdiction.
Quinine and other cinchona al
kaloids have been recognized for
years as the most, if not the only,
valuable treatment for this serious
malady; bu^ in the enforcement of
the Federal food and drugs act,
government officers have encoun

falsely recommended for malaria,
which contained little or no qui

manufacturers have been prose
cuted.
"The standard quinine treatment
recommended by the National Ma
laria Committee and approved by
the United States Public Health
Service has for more than 10 years
been recognized as the approved
treatment for this disease,” says
Doctor Cullen.
