Booker Washington did not shine particularly that night. Magg’- Washington made an in teresting speech on her work among Negro mothers. But the person who remains in my memory is the late William H. Baldwin. I can see him now at the speakers’ table, leaning for ward, looking at Washington and saying: “I worship that man.” I went home with a new idea. I was considering leaving Green point. Our work was growing less important since the public school system had started evening classes in domestic science. Might not my next ventu be among Negroes? That was my last year at Green point. I left more of a radical than when I entered. Labor conditions about me and the discussions at the Social Reform Club had made me a socialist though I did -not join the party for two years. I was more revolutionary than the workers with whom I came m contact. It was hard to get them even to agitate for shorter hours. They were afraid of losing heir jobs. The well-fed, whose jobs are not precarious, can agitate for the poor. But let their jobs be touched and they are as conservative as any one else. John Bright worke ’ fer the improvement of the rural laborer in England, but his fathers money was in industry and the son never helped the factory hand. . Greenpoint seems far a way now. I have kept up with a few of my boys and girls but I never go back. Another race, another group has ab sorbed my attention. I learned a lot living among working people but I doubt whether I did much except for a few individuals. I could not change the economic situation, and the things for which I cared most, Greenpoint did not care for at all. Books were too dull to open. Music, in any real sense, was un .own. There were glorious exceptions, but the intellec tual stimulus that a Jewish neigh borhood gives was unknown to me. I shall never forget the first party the boys gave an (b which I was invited as an honored guest. I spent my time watching the hands of the great clock on the wall move slowly, so slowly that each minute was ten. An^ second I expected a trustee to enter and view the horrid vaude ville. I gave a party in return that soon got quite beyond my ontrol. The girls sat in the boys’ laps, explain ing to me afterward' that there were not chairs enough to go around. Of cake and fruit, thrown playfully about, there wa~ gathered up afterwards one large pailful. The dancing class was formed to teach manners. It helped, but much, very much, was left to be desired. While I swept up the floor after a party I consoled mysell with the thought that thl. would all change with the coming genera'ion. The children of these boys and girls, with improved industrial conditions, with shorter hours, r’ould love the finest things in life. The shorter hours have come, but not the dream. Indeed, the reverse has occurred. Instead of Greenpoint’s reaching up to the polite- elevation of Brook lyn Heights it has pulled the old elevation down amid laughter and jeers.
