place where he transacted business. “Here he is, kid,” he said with a sarcastic gesture, pointing toward the limp, bloody and scarcely mov ing body which was draped over the broad shoulders of the man called Monkey. “He didn't get very far; in fact, we found him i snooping right out in back of this place.” The body rolled from Monkey’s shoulders onto a low divan. Linda thought fast. If she let the Ace think, as he seemed to be lieve, that it was Al and not Fred that she loved, perhaps he would leave Fred alone long enough to carry out his plans. Quickly she flung herself on her knees beside Al—poor Al, who had been forced to take so much punishment—and caressed his swollen, bruised face with fingers that trembled. The Ace smiled. He knew that this man was dying, could not possibly live Use This Laxative Tjiedfobd's BLACK-DRAUGHT Is 'made from plants that come up from seed3 and grow In the ground, like the garden vegetables you eat at every meal. NOW HE CAN MAKE ENOUGH SOUP TO SERVE EVERYBODY IN D.C.—John Thurston, Washington cafe operator, had to tell the cameraman to hurry be cause he could not hold this monster turtle up by his rear legs very long When stretched out, the sea ani mal measured three feet, with a weight of 65 pounds. another hour. Ana after that, Lin da would be his— Linda thanked her self-control that she had been able to disguise her real feelings. She might yet be able to put it over on the Ace! Someone? knocked on the steel reenforced door. The Ace glanced through the peep-hole. It was Rod Johnson. He pressed the button which opened it and the Rod scur ried in. He took in the situation at a glance. “We gotta work fast,” he said. “We just sprung Scar Short outa jail and the coppers are on our trails like nobody's business. Scar’ll be here in a minute, and there’ll probably be a million dicks behind him. Get out your rods, boys; we’re due for a fight!” The Ace ran to the side wall of his office room and opened back a panel wall, disclosing firearms of every make and calibre. “Load up, you guys,” he cried. “Let’s get outa here while the getting’s good. Monkey, you get the car. Park it on the side and we'll be out in a minute. Make it snappy now!” There was another knock on the door. “It’s Scar, ’ Rod cried with out looking. “Open up, quick!” The Ace pressed the button; the heavy door cwung open once again. But they were wrong; it wasn’t Hear. For in five seconds the hall was full of blue-coated men. The giant door exploded and toppled over as a hand bomb went or under it. “Stand back!” The Ace heard a familiar voice now, the voice of Fred Harris, the crazy young evan gelist who had started all this row. There was a dull roar as another bomb tore into the place. Then smoke engulfed the room, and the men shrieked and blabbered as tear gas engulfed them. It was all over as quickly as it had begun. Four cops rushed across the lead-swept floor, led by Fred Harris. With nightsticks they subdued the rebellious but blinded chief tans of gangland. But Fred had another mission. “Linda Linda!” he cried as he searched through the misty darkness. Great tears willed up in his eyes from the gas; his sight began to fail. But at last he found her, stumbled over her soft, yielding body flung behind the heavy mahogany desk which, fortunately, had proved bullet proof. It took the last ounce of his (Strength to drag her out of that I gas-clouded room. He fell exhaust ed as he reached the door. Two bluecoats rushed to help them. When his sight became less blurred he saw that the coppers had been just in time; they had captured Scar Short on his way into the hideout and they had taken the Ace, Rod Johnson and Big Joe Wil son all in one immense coup. A1 Collins had died, but his 'eath had been for a good cause. For racket eering had been dealt its death blow in Harlem at last. It was a full week before he re covered, a week before he returned to the Gospel Tent a triumphant leader of Harlem’s populace, a week before Linda pressed her lips against his so meaningfully and whispered. “I’m terribly proud of you, Fred.” THE END. The other day on entering my employer's office, 1 chanced to see a photo on the table Although the face was not visible, it was, judging" from the clothing, a picture of a tramp. Laughingly, I said, “I wonder where they got the bum to pose for this picture?” A feeling of tension in the air made me look up and caused the smile on my face to fade to a smirk. The lo:k on my boss's face and his habitually unkempt appear ance brought back that remem brance that he had posed for a photo just a few days before.
