'Hi GJdele Qhrrisoi^ for Madge. ^^^1 pride myself upon not showing •Astonishment at moat unexpected T happenings, but at sight of the two ' Chinese suddenly materializing from •the woodland at the blast I had »blown upon the whistle Lee Chow - ligfi given me, I stared open-mouthed - first at the men and then at Lee Chow. He permitted himself a lofty imile then spoke one word softly: "Watch!” The admonition was unnecessary, my eyes followed his every motion most carefully, but when he waved his hand In lordly fashion, and the two Chinese sank Immediately out of sight behind the shrubbery, I felt a desire for laughter so strong that I .had difficulty in controlling my ris lbles. It was so obviously theatrical, so blatant a bid for my astonishment— snd gratification—that I am afraid I did not do full Justice to Id>e Chow's very real desire to serve me In my amusement at these melodramatic little stunA she had staged. I did not supiwse that Lee Chow sms familiar with the poems of Sir Walter Scott, yet there was some thing very reminiscent In the per formance of a scene from "The I>ady of the Ijake,” when the Scottish chieftain brought a body of clansmen fully armed from the heather at a blast of his bugle, and sent them to cover again at a wave of hts hand. I added the mental comment that some laundry In the vicinity of Mar rln must be short handed this morn lng even ss Lee Chow looked at me with a bland smile, and quried: “The Impulse Was Strong." |^^^"You see? You like?” knew that the wily Chinese had staged the thing for some purpose of . his own. He must have surmised that I after the children's encounter with ‘•the tramp I would be watching the • 1 woodland, and deliberately ranged up l and down through It until my atten tion had been attracted to his move ments, and I had investigated, some thing upon which he had counted when he had planted his “supers” from the laundry. The Impulse was strong upon me to reprove him for making me the central figure in so ' absurd a performance, but a sudden conjecture as fantastic ss It was con ; vjnclng, stopped me. For years Hugh flrantland has kept me Informed of his every change of address by post cards, with his Initials and address -nothing more, because of his fastidious fear of some possible criticism of our friendship. The post cards stopped coming only a. few weeks before my receipt of ♦ he weird fantastic letter front him. which gald that he waa facing denth. and would never be able to ace me again. Ixtng ago when he told me that he always would keep me ad vised of his whereabouts, he also said that I was to remember he would always be wntchlng over me. Was It possible that he hint kept I that watch by means of this faithful servant, so doglike In his devotion - to the armv officer that hls master's lightest word had the force of a sol Injunction? ' "Like a Dash of Water.” During all these years had I l>een ; under the espionage of this bizarre looking Oriental? I knew that Hugh • Grantlrnd was wealthy enough to Indulge himself In the employment of a hundred sueh men Instead of one If he so desired, and I thrilled for a second with the Idea of such fan tastic devotion to my safety as this "watchfulness indicated. bike a sudden dash nf cold water upon this Ingenious theory came the resemblance of the fact that bee Chow's explanation of his midnight climb to the roof of the farmhouee and his peering In at my window, was the necessity of establishing mv Identity with the kodak print of me, taken by Hugh Orantland, He could not have been watching over me for years without being familiar, with my appearance. But— My Imagination jumped to another angle— bee Chow's oriental mind was capable of any amount of camouflage and roundabout wandering In order to obtain the effect he wished to produce. He might have known my appearance perfectly and yet pretend ed Ignorance for some mysterious rea son of his own. I came hack from the realm of con jecture with an effort and with no scintilla of conviction upon which my bewildered mind could rest. bee Chow’s eyes, expressionless ss those of s jade god, stared into mine, and I knew that he was waiting for the answer to the question he had ask ed me concerning his spectacular precautions for my safety. "I like it very much, bee Chow,” T said. "But why have you brought these men here?” "For tomorrow,” he replied, "so when boss lady and old hose lady come here, talk big white man, they not be afraid, bee Chow here, his men here. Big whits man no can hurt. No can do.” A Substitute for Whipped Cream. Here Is a fire euhetltiile for whipped cream. Heat the white* of two egg* until stiff. Orate a cup of apples or use apple sauce. Dear Miss Allen: I am a constant reader of your column, and last eve ning I read "Young Mother's” letter. It brought back memories of my own experience and l wonder If by telling tny story I might help her to decide her problem. I married the man I loved, and two years later a darling baby girl came to crown njy happiness, for I was then happy: I had a lovely home and all I wanted. My husband owned his business and was making good, but after baby came he did not seem the same. He was seldom home and was cross snd Ill-tempered when he was. Gossip soon told me the cause. Another wo man was winning him from his home and hahy. and I told him I would leave hint with the hahy, hut he only laughed at me, and oh, MIsa Allen, how It hurt me, for I still loved him. A few months passed and I could atand it no longer, ao I wrote him a nice letter, left It on the table and walked out of my once happy home. I went to a city far away and went to work, but 1 was miserable. I cried for my baby and would wake up in the night thinking I heard her cry for me. I never wrote home to find out how she was. I thought, that In time I could forget, hut I could not, and one year from the day I left my home I went hack to find m.v baby. Mv folks had taken her. and oh, the joy I found holding her to my heart once more. My husband was a different man; he was repentant and heartbroken: he had elosed our home the night he found me gone, and everything was as 1 had left It. He said his love was mine, that It was only Infatuation he had for the other woman. (That Is my story. Miss Allen.) I spent a year of misery—that seemed like ages Toung mother, stay with your babies; do not leave them, for maybe you could not come back to your home s$ I did, and those babies are worth more than any man's love. I am happy again now, and, young mother, you will find your reward if you stand by those babies. My letter Is long. Miss Allen, hut It may help some one. A MOTHER WHO KNOWS. No Cause to Worry. Perplexed: From your husband s point of view he Is doing nothing wrong. His recreation Is quite harm less in my opinion and will not lead to anything worse. At least you have no cause to worry now and are making a great mistake in opposing him so strenuously and forcing him to disregard your wishes In the mat ter. When he goes away for an eve ning every three or four weeks, you ought to be very grateful that he does not return to you drunk and that tt la every three or four weeks and not every night that he leaves you. Bride to Be: Have your dining room lighted with candles. There is always mystery add beauty in candle light. I'se a beautiful bouquet In the center of the table, pink roses, if your color scheme is pink. A light white cake Is preferable for a wedding cake. * If you are taking a trip, a travel Ing suit with a chic hat and smart gloves and shoes, with a colorful cor sage, would make a pretty wedding costume, especially for this time of year. But if you are having a large wedding, I think the white gown would he my choice. By all means take the trip Instead of staying at home for a dance. Daisy Doll: The Pepper Pot club Is composed of a group of girls who have been friends for a number of years. There are only eight mem hers. Capes are always worn, more or less, but the three-piece suit is more fashionable now than the cape. Mrs. J. 8.
