Net gains tn the active Issues ranged 1 to S'i points. Veteran traders and market analysts had to turn hack the pages ot financial history nearly 25 years "lien Gould and Mamman were in the heyday of their power to find a "railroad market” to equal the pres ent on* in volume and breadth. Thirty-seven separate railroad Issues today bioko through their previous 1921 quotations, some of them attain ing tho highest prices In history while many others changed hands at tho highest quotations In years. The first great buying movement in the rail shares started on the day after election, when it became ap parent that the so-called “radical bloc" had lost the “balance of power,” leaving tho railroads free to carry out consolidation and development plans that had been held up by fear of ad verse legislation. Inauguration of di vidends on St. I.ouls-San Francisco common and preferred, with Indica tions that similar action will be tak en In the near future on the senior Issues of the "Katy" and Wahash sys tems, added fuel to the speculative flame, which burned with increased fury today as a result of the favor able Impression created by the presi dent's message to congress yesterday, in which he looked with approval on railroad consolidations and urged the passage of legislation to expedite them on the grounds of economy. Southern carriers led the advance in the rail group, Frisco common and preferred, “Katy" common and pre ferred the three Wabash issues, St. Fouls Southwestern, Omaha and “Soo” being bid up one to nearly six points. High grade dividend payers followed in their wake, Pennsylvania, l Atlanttc Cddst line, Illinois Central J common and preferred, Chesapeake & Ohio and Baltimore & Ohio being among the long list of new tops. Tn their zeal to get aboard the “band wagon” speculators dug up many Issues that ordinarily are not traded In for weeks or months at a time. Atlanta. Birmingham & At lantic, which has bden in receiver ship since 1021, was bid up to $5 a share as against a low of $2.87 1-2 yes terday, an appreciation in quoted value of nearly 66 per cent. Several other ordinarily Inactive Issues took on a new lease of Ufe, the number of Individual Issues of all classes dealt in during the day being 554 as against the record of 575 on Novem ber 19. , COURT UPHOLDS | RAIL VALUATION Special IMcpatch to The Omaha Brc, Fincoln. -Pec. 4.—The supreme court today upheld the revised assessment of $9,571,496 placed on Rock Island ho'dings in Nebraska for 1923 by the state board of -equalization. Aged Vet Sends Bit to Shoe Fund “God Bless the Offering,” Writes E. C. Gaston, 89, Sending Contribution. ‘‘Ood bless the offering.” These words accompanied a con tribution of $2.50 to The Omaha Bee Free Shoe Fund sent in by E. C. Oaston, who lives at the Soldiers' and Sailors’ home at Milford, Neb. Mr. Oaston will be 89 next March, but each year he contributes his bit so that some youngster In Omaha may have a good, stout pair of shoes to wear to school. Very shortly the first shoes will be bought for those who need them the most. Only children whose teachers recommend them as beneficiaries of the fund will get them. The system, In years past, has been found to be most practicable. The price of one pair of shoes might save some little boy and girl from bad colds, perhaps pneumonia, this winter.
