Chicago, Nov. 24.—Aggressive buying

Local holders were credited with sett

Stoc k Market in
Class by Itself;
No Reaction Yet
Little Change in Averages,
Rails Register Small De
cline and Industrials
Make Small Advance.
By RICHARD SI’IIXANE.
Universal Ncrvic© Financial Editor.
Now York. Nov. 24.—This stock market
% in a class by Itself. There has boon
no other like It. By all ordinary rules,
considering the big advance of last week,
there should have been a sharp reaction
today. While there was a big accumu
lation of orders over the week-end. mostly
in low-price rails, there was an apparent
decline in enthusiasm for the regular
market favorites, particularly the high
price rails and the leading industrials.
What is loosely termed the technical
position would have been strained If the
market had been like markets of other
days, when the hulk of trading was on
margin. The financing of a large part
of the recent buying ha* been by the
mid db* west and doesn’t appear In New
York banking loan statement*.
From start to finish, the market today
was a mixed and highly complicated af
fair Transactions in the usual leaders,
United .States Steel, American Can. Bald
win and Cast Iron Pipe, were much re
duced. Price movement amongothe rails
was not uniform. Transactions in the St.
Paul issue* were very large. Rock Island
ran off nearly 3 points from its high of
the day, when Charles Hayden again de
nied that the Southern Pacific was to
take over that road.
There was unusual activity In Issues
like Industrial Alcohol. Stewart-Warner,
North American. American Sugar. Con
tinental Can, Austin Nichols, Central
Leather, etc.
The net result was little change In
the market averages rails registering a
small decline and industrials a small ad
vance.
Again transactions exceeded 2,n»)0.00$
sha res.
Foreign exchange, steady.
• ’all money opened at 2% per cent, but
softened to 2 per cent
Time money somewhat higher.
Cotton was affected for a time by the
December position. December and March
were 70 points apart at one time, and
December nnd May 100 points apart.
Such strength ns the grain market
showed was confined to wheat and oats.
Liverpool wheat prices worn about as due.
Australia cables said there was large
chartering of vessels there to move grain,
and Kansas City had news of three car
goes of hard wheat engaged for Turkev.
There was extensive profit taking in
corn early In the day.
Lard was up 7 to 17 points.
