10 Bullish Wheat News and Prices 'Reach New Hi"hs Aggressive Buying Enters Pit; Corn Swings Back and Forth; Oats Close Firm With Wheat. By CHARLES J. LEYDEN. I'nlvrrMl Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago, Nov. 24.—Aggressive buying entered the wheat pit today In response t<» an abundance of bull news and prices climbed to new high levels for the season, the May touching $1.54%. Pessimistic crop news from Australia and the Argen tine. fairly active export trade, strength In Liverpool ami a decrease In the United States visible supply, the first since July 21, were the Influences that put the market up Wheat closed 1 %o to l%c higher, corn was %c higher to %c lower, oats were %c to %c higher and rye ruled %c to •Vji ,• up. December wheat displayed « relatively firmer undertone than the later months most of the session. This was very gratifying to the hulls. Cash interests and millers w'ere credited with buying in hedges 1n December and replacing them In the May. Northwest markets showed relative strength compared with Chicago. There was heavy buying of Minneapolis futures against export sales of Dultuh wheat. The seaboard confirmed export sales in nil positions at 500,000 bushels The United Kingdom and the continent were the best buyers. Liverpool closed 3d to Corn^swung back and forth throughout the session and finished uneven. Com mission houses were good sellers of this grain on th** bulges. Ip fact, the char acter of the selling was termed better than the demand. The new' crop )a mov ing to market tnore rapidly, and the de mand for It sc far ha« proven a disap pointment. Old corn Is in demand at flint levels, but the new stuff remains at a sharp discount under the nearby delivery. Oats’ moved within a very n*rr(\w r-nge and closed firm with wheat. Trade was not large. ,, Local holders were credited with sett ing out rye and in some instances rein itating in the whea't market. The export demand for this grain continues active, and Germany was said to be in tne market wtih bids unworkable, however. provisions were firm. Lard was f>s to 7 He higher and riba were 2%c to 25c up. ' Pit Notes. Profit taking In wheat on the ntot during the last few minutes of trail was heavy, but the demand proved I sufficient for all offerings. There seems to he a general shift of December hedges into the May anywhere from 1« • difference. This seems to reflect the Idea that deliveries on contract next month will he smaller than expected a week arc, and alao that what wheat Is delivered will be readily taken. Rains In Australia were again com plained or. and with harvesting under way In that country further damage to the crop was feared Some message, said that rains In the Argentine could do The crop no good, while If they continue a wit Earnest would result The word supply and demand situation Is so closely adjusted that a further lowering of the probable surpluses In Australia and Ar. pentina would probably have unusual ef ^ TV hat leased the hulls meat was the Inroad made Into the big visible supply. Universal Ncrvic© Financial Editor. Now York. Nov. 24.—This stock market % in a class by Itself. There has boon no other like It. By all ordinary rules, considering the big advance of last week, there should have been a sharp reaction today. While there was a big accumu lation of orders over the week-end. mostly in low-price rails, there was an apparent decline in enthusiasm for the regular market favorites, particularly the high price rails and the leading industrials. What is loosely termed the technical position would have been strained If the market had been like markets of other days, when the hulk of trading was on margin. The financing of a large part of the recent buying ha* been by the mid db* west and doesn’t appear In New York banking loan statement*. From start to finish, the market today was a mixed and highly complicated af fair Transactions in the usual leaders, United .States Steel, American Can. Bald win and Cast Iron Pipe, were much re duced. Price movement amongothe rails was not uniform. Transactions in the St. Paul issue* were very large. Rock Island ran off nearly 3 points from its high of the day, when Charles Hayden again de nied that the Southern Pacific was to take over that road. There was unusual activity In Issues like Industrial Alcohol. Stewart-Warner, North American. American Sugar. Con tinental Can, Austin Nichols, Central Leather, etc. The net result was little change In the market averages rails registering a small decline and industrials a small ad vance. Again transactions exceeded 2,n»)0.00$ sha res. Foreign exchange, steady. • ’all money opened at 2% per cent, but softened to 2 per cent Time money somewhat higher. Cotton was affected for a time by the December position. December and March were 70 points apart at one time, and December nnd May 100 points apart. Such strength ns the grain market showed was confined to wheat and oats. Liverpool wheat prices worn about as due. Australia cables said there was large chartering of vessels there to move grain, and Kansas City had news of three car goes of hard wheat engaged for Turkev. There was extensive profit taking in corn early In the day. Lard was up 7 to 17 points. --N | New York Quotations V-/ New' York Stock exchange quotations furnished by J.
