First in Amateur
Cartoon Contest
200 Drawings Submitted and
Capt. Bairnsfather Praises
Talent of Local
Folks.

over a field of more than 200 con
testants in the Bruce Bairnsfather
cartoon drawing contest conducted by
The Omaha Bee.
Second prize of $15 was awarded
II. H. Howard, Morris apartments,
and third prize of $10 to George llow
ley, 2406 Harney street.
Mr. Bairnsfather. famous English
cartoonist and creator of “Old Bill,”
of world war fame, selected the
three winners Saturday noon in The
Omaha Bee editorial rooms. Amateur
cartoonist from Iowa. Nebraska and
South Dakota contributed sketches.
The cartoon which won first prize
was captioned "Heroes That Should
Be Honored," and illustrated a car
toonist dedicating his life’s work to
making others laugh.
Originality and Ability.
Captain Bairnsfather praised the
Idea and declared Novak displayed
both originality and natural ability
to draw.
The second prize-winning cartoon
submitted by Howard, treated In a
kindly, grotesque manner the pro
posed tax reduction, asking in the
caption: "Is It An Illusion or Is It?”
The thought and drawing of this
sketch also were commended by "Old
BIU's" creator.
"Miss Spring,” ushering in the sea
son of outdoor sports and portrayed
standing "on the top of the world,”
was the illustration that won Ilowley
•> thicA Jtonors.
Local Talent Praised.
There were many drawings which

ths winners ind the contest resulted
In ths discovery that there are many
amateur cartoonists of ability In the
area covered by The Omaha Bee.
Checks were mailed to the winners
Saturday by the Omaha Bee.
Captain Balrnafather has judged
more than 8,000 drawings by ama
teur cartoonists since he began a
tour of ths Orpheum and Keith cir
cuits eight months ago.
In Denver a few weeks ago a bar
ber won first prlzs and the unusual
ability hs displayed as a cartoonist,
together with the vividness and fores
fulness with which the Idea was
clfutness with which the Idea was
presented resulted In him being em
ployed by a Denver newspaper.
Future for Gifted.
Captain Balrnsfather said he hoped
theee contests would result in many
young men specializing In this field
of work, which he declared offered
a rosy future for one with talent.
The English cartoonist completed
his week's engagement at the Or
pheum Saturday and left for Indian
apolis. He will remain In America
four more weeks and then return to
his home in England for a visit and
then come back to America to re
sums his work as a cartoonist.
New Fraternity Is
Framed at Lincoln

Lincoln, March 22.—An engineering
fraternity with a charter membership
of 1*. has been formed at the Uni
versity of Nebraska. It has adopted
the name of Mu Sigma.
Members are selected from students
of the engineering college, who have
reached their sophomore year. A
house will be maintained for the use
of the members.

Tiny Boat Cruise Fails.
Liverpool, Feb. 22.—American
immigration authorities have been
saved soms labor by Mersey life
savers.
The llfesavers picked up a small
bleat In difficulties In the mouth of
the Mersey. The eole occupant of the
boat waa Marcus Hill, 15, of Birken
head. He tearfully explained that
ha had set out for America when
overcome by the hostility of ths wild
waves.
Marcus won’t bother the American
immigration officials until he haa a
chance to try hie venture again with
a larger boat.

Wife Wears Fur Coat
Caught, Tanned and
Sewed by Her Husband

Newcastle, Neb., March 22.—Mrs. T.
.T. Ryan, living near the Missouri
river, not far from Newcastle, hse e
unique and very beautiful fur coat,
which she prizes highly, made from
the skins of five coyotes end two
raccoons which were caught by her
husband.
Mr. Ryan, wishing to please his
young wife, tanned, cut and sewed the
hides himself, without any pattern
and without any suggestions. Tlje
seams of ths coat are scarcely dis
cernible, and the artistic design and
orderly arrangement of the skins are
remarkable.
The back of this extraordinary coat
Is made of one b'.g coyote skin so that
the etripes extend from the top to the
bottom In a striking way, and the
coyote tail hangs at the bottom as a
part of the trimming. The other
coyote tails make up the rest
of the trimming around the bottom
of the coat, while the cuffs and col
lar ere ma<Ja from the raccoon skins
with one skin and Ull hanging from
tha neck at the back. On each
shoulder Is a design made from the
soft fur of the coyotes’ breasts. The
noat U lined with blue teffeta, and
probably la worth several hundred
