Louis Novak Wins First in Amateur Cartoon Contest 200 Drawings Submitted and Capt. Bairnsfather Praises Talent of Local Folks. Louis Novak, 1258 South Thir teenth street, won first prize of $25 over a field of more than 200 con testants in the Bruce Bairnsfather cartoon drawing contest conducted by The Omaha Bee. Second prize of $15 was awarded II. H. Howard, Morris apartments, and third prize of $10 to George llow ley, 2406 Harney street. Mr. Bairnsfather. famous English cartoonist and creator of “Old Bill,” of world war fame, selected the three winners Saturday noon in The Omaha Bee editorial rooms. Amateur cartoonist from Iowa. Nebraska and South Dakota contributed sketches. The cartoon which won first prize was captioned "Heroes That Should Be Honored," and illustrated a car toonist dedicating his life’s work to making others laugh. Originality and Ability. Captain Bairnsfather praised the Idea and declared Novak displayed both originality and natural ability to draw. The second prize-winning cartoon submitted by Howard, treated In a kindly, grotesque manner the pro posed tax reduction, asking in the caption: "Is It An Illusion or Is It?” The thought and drawing of this sketch also were commended by "Old BIU's" creator. "Miss Spring,” ushering in the sea son of outdoor sports and portrayed standing "on the top of the world,” was the illustration that won Ilowley •> thicA Jtonors. Local Talent Praised. There were many drawings which Captain Balrnsfather took occasion to praise during the selections of ths winners ind the contest resulted In ths discovery that there are many amateur cartoonists of ability In the area covered by The Omaha Bee. Checks were mailed to the winners Saturday by the Omaha Bee. Captain Balrnafather has judged more than 8,000 drawings by ama teur cartoonists since he began a tour of ths Orpheum and Keith cir cuits eight months ago. In Denver a few weeks ago a bar ber won first prlzs and the unusual ability hs displayed as a cartoonist, together with the vividness and fores fulness with which the Idea was clfutness with which the Idea was presented resulted In him being em ployed by a Denver newspaper. Future for Gifted. Captain Balrnsfather said he hoped theee contests would result in many young men specializing In this field of work, which he declared offered a rosy future for one with talent. The English cartoonist completed his week's engagement at the Or pheum Saturday and left for Indian apolis. He will remain In America four more weeks and then return to his home in England for a visit and then come back to America to re sums his work as a cartoonist.
