^ Danny and Nanny Admire Their
New Cousin.
Uanny ami Nanny Meadow Mouse,
who are themselves very homely little
people, admired their new cousin.
I rader the Wood Rat. Of course, he
really wasn't a new cousin; he was
simply new to them. It seemed to
them that he was the handsomest fel
low they ever had seen. Certainly
he waa the handsomest^member of
their family.
Instead of being thick-bodied and
clumsy looking, us was Little Hobbit
the Cotton Ilat, and as were Lanny
and Nanny themselves. Trader was
well formed and comparatively slen
dor, more like a member of the Squir
rel family. His coat was a mixture
of gray and light brown, and Instead
of being coarse and rough, as are the
carats of most members of tlie Rat
family, it was soft and fine. Under
neath he was white and his feet were
white. Ills tail was long, round and
tapered and his ears were large.
"You remind me of a cousin of
whom I atn very fond, only you ure
very mu. h bigger." said Danny.
"Who is that?" asked Trader.
"Whitefoot the Wood Mouse," re
plied Danny. "If W'hitefoot would
grow to bi as big as you you would
look enough alike to be brothers. Did

you say your name is Trader the
Wood Hat'.’"
"That is what they call me." re
plied this new-found cousin.
"That's funny, because up North
where we came from is a Trader the
Wood Rat, too. Now I think of it, he
looks a good deal like you, only he
has a bushy tail." said Danny.
Trader nodded. "We belong to the
same family,” said he. ”I’ve heard
about that Northern cousin of mine.
I suppose we have much the same
habits, and so we are called by the
same name. He is Trader the Wood
the North, howf ever did you get way
Wood Rat of the South. Speaking of
the North, however did you get way
down here?”
Once more Danny and Nanny told
the story of how they had been
'brought down there by the great man
bird, as they always called the air
plane. They told about their great
fall and how they had left the great
man-bird to make their home under
a stump on the edge of the garden
Trader listened with a great deal
of interest. "I’ve Been that great
man-bird.” said he. “In fact, I’ve
visited it several tlmerj. It seems to
be dead. I have wondered what it
was. I hope you like the Sunny
South.”
It seemed to them that he van the
lundfcoraowt fellow they had ever
seen.
Danny thought of his adventures
with Gray Fox and Yowler the Bob
Cat. "We would,'' said he, "if we
felt safe." Then he told Trader all
about his dreadful experience and
narrow escape,
"Don't mind those fellows," re
plied Trader. “You'll soon get used
to them and know how to watch out
for them. You'll find no more dangers
In the Sunny South than you did up
where you came from. As soon as
you get used to them you’ll find that
you can live as comfortably here as
you could up there. Now I must
go about my business, l hope we'll
see each other often."
“I hope so,'' replied Danny, and he
meant it.
“Isn't he handsome!" exclaimed
Nanny as they watched Trader dis
appear in the Black Shadows.
“And he's just as nice as he If
handsome." said Danny.
(Cop right. 1924.)
The next story: "The Home of
, Trader the Wood Rat."
