—Danny Meadow Mouse.
The Snowy Cousin of Longlegs.
Danny Meadow Mouse was feeling
more and more at home. There were
so many wonderful things to see
that most of the time he forgot he
was lonesome. In fact, the only
times he really felt lonesome were
when he curled up for his mips. He
saw Mocker the Mockingbird often,
and still more often heard nlm sing
ing. Almost every day he saw Hum
mer the Hummingbird. These
glimpses of old friends made the
sunny south seem less strange than
it would have otherwise.
Danny had kept away from the
bank of the river since the day when
he made the acquaintance of Gator
the Alligator. It made him shiver
every time he thought of that mouth
ful of great teeth he had seen. Dut
he hud learned that Gator wart not to
be feared ou land unless one tame
too near him. So one morning he
again ventured over to the bank of
the river.
Standing on the edge of the water,
<ust as he had seen Uonglegs the
Great Blue Heron standing.on the
edge nf the Smiling Pool so many
tui'.i was a bird, who at first Danny
thought must hr Lung legs himself
with a changed i■unt. Tills bird's coat
was snowy white. Yes, sir, it was
snowy white. Danny was almost on
the point of asking Ihe stranger if
he were not Longlegs when lie

noticed that this bird was not quite
as l»lg as Longlegs.
"Anyway, he must belong to the
same family," thought Danny. "I
wonder If It will he safe to speak to
him. 1 never did dare get very near
to Uonglegs, for 1 have known him
to snap up a .Meadow Mouse in the
same way he does frogs and fLsh.
Perhaps this fellow doesn't eat Mea
dow Mice. Anyway, 1 can keep at a
safe distance."
The big, white bird was motion
less, with -head drawn back on his
shoulders anil appeared to l>e asleep.
Danny could see his long, yellow hill,
but he couldn't see his eyes. Had he
seen them he would have found that
they were anything bqt sleepy-look
lng.
"Do you belong to the Heron fam
ily?" squeaked Danny.
The stranger straightened up sud
denly, and fixed a bright eye on
“Certainly, I'm a cousin,” said the
stranger, “hut who may you be?”
Danny. “I certainly do,” said he. "I
certainly do. Why?”
“Then you must be a cousin of
Donglegs the Great Blue Heron. I
just wanted to make sure," replied
Danny politely.
“Certainly I'm a cousin.” said the
stranger. “But who may you be?”
“I'm Danny Meadow Mouse.” re
plied Danny, "and I've come down
from way up North to see what the
Sunny South is like. My, how hand
some you are"’
The stranger looked pleased. He
stretched his broad, white wings and
fluffed out all hi3 feathers. He
stretched up to his full height. “I'm
glad you think so," said hp. "But
you should see me in the spring.
