“My Husband's Love”
Leila Pulled Herself Together
for the Ordeal.
I wasted no seconds in knocking
upon Leila Durkee's door, f»»r 1 did
not wish tt» gi\e her a chance to re
fuse me entrance. It was no time
to stand upon ceremony, and wiih
only the warning, ‘It 1. Delia,
dear, I am coming in.” [ opened the
door and walked into Iter room.
She had flung herself down full
length upon her bed and front the
pillows in which her f re was buried
came the little quivering breaths
which follow a fit of weeping. She
looked pitifully slight and fragile,
and I felt my heart constrict with
pity for her. Rut 1 had no time to
know that giving way to her ner
vous fears *was the worst possible
thing for her own condition, to say
nothing of the effect which the
knowledge of her oroakdown would
have upon the elder , Mrs/ Durkee,
battling so bravely with her own
nerves.
Going directly to the bed I put a
compelling hand upon her shoulder
and summoned all inv courage.
"Leila, dear.'* I said gravely, “are
vou going to be the only one In this
house to fail your mother-indaw ?“
She twisted sharply up from her
pillows and caught at my arm. I
had expected a flash of resentment
ip her eyes, hut nothing save terror
was mirrored hi them.
“Oh, do you mean she h*nd to go
to the hospital?" she walled. "Is
Dr. Hraithwaite-"
Madge Breaks the News.
1 caught her fluttering hands nn4
held them firmly, while I looked
steadily into her tear-swollen eyes.
"He is going to operate tomorrow
morning." I said. “We are taking
her to the hospital in an hour. He
says that there must he none but
cheery faces about her. How about
it? Are you going to play the game
with the* lest of in Her very life
may depend upon you." ^
I saw th. resentment now, flam
ing, involuntarily, hut only for an in
stant. Then liar hands clutched
mine lighter, and sin* pulled herself
to her fee t, swaying, but patently
bringing both her physical and mental
faculties into subjection to her will.
"I'm II right now." she faltered
gamely after si few seconds. "What
do you want me to do?"
'a let your eyes and face 111 shape
first ' I replied promptly "(’old com
presses, followed by that wagb for
tired eyes, and a judicious application
rtf powder to your face ought to do
the .trick. Then as soon ns you are
sure you won’t break down, go in to
see Alfred's toother.”
"f shan't break down." She lifted\
l.er head proudly, and looking at her.
I saw that she spoke but the truth.
She had herself well in hand, and
though the reaction undoubtedly
I would come, she would be able to go
through the coming ordeal without
faltering. _
"Am I to go with Mother Durkee?’
she asked, with a worried glance at
the litUj clock upon her dressing
table.
One Seat l.pft.
‘1 don't know, but perhaps we can
figure it out." I replied. 'Dr. Braith
waite has ordered a heated limousine
Of course he and Katherine must go.
and your mother-in-law naturally will
want Alfred with her. Without crowd
ing that will leave one extra place.
There are three of us left. Mrs. Braith
wajte. you and f. I will stay here in
any case unlit I have performed any
commissions Mrs. Durkee may have
for me, and then I will take a train
in. f know Mrs. Bralthwaite will
istay with me if you wish to go.”
“It will be what Mother Durkee
I w ishes, I think." Leila replied with
gentle dignity, and l rejoiced at tie
quiet little snub, for it meant that
she was distinctly herself again,
ready to assume her place as chate
laine of the^distressed household.
“That, of course." I replied cheer
ily. "Is there anything I ran do to
help you" No? s 1 11 run down to the

"I'll he on hand In 10 minutes,"
eho promised, and she was as good
as her word, for when f within the

to Mrs. Durkee’s room. I found her
daughter-in-law with smiling fare
and cheeky volet helping Katherine
to pack a bag. Dr Ilraithwjalte and
Alfred were coming out of the
