American Woman Is
Fast Besoming Ugly,
Declares Biologist
By Anaoclated Prem.
Topeka, Kan., Oct. 19.—The Ameri
can woman is rapidly becoming
ugly, Albert Edward Wiggam, biolo
gist and publicist of New York, de
clared in an address prepared for
delivery here today before a group
of Kansas teachers.
"Our beautiful women soon will
cease to exist except in pictures and
statuary.” Mr. Wiggam asserted.
He based his < om lusion on I lie dis
parity between Idrth rate among
American women of the highest
type and that among low-class im
migrants.
“There is only one way out,” he
said. "The old family ideals must
lie restmed. The old American home
stead u ith its good sired family of
nell-horn children must be rebuilt.
The mother must replace the flap
per as the national Ideal.”
Free State Liberates 60.

cials.

than 400 Sinn Fein prisoners are bun
ger striking. They sang hymns and
prayed.
Free state government officials in
timate that the hunger strikes are in
effective lrecause the prisoners are
secretly receiving food from the out

Stories
By THORNTON W. Bl ROE88.
There * tome on alway* ready to profit
If he may
By trouble* of the neighbor* he m*et*
along: the way —Bob White.
Redd) Hm to Look Elsewhere for
s Dinner.
Reddy Fox soon picked up the trail
of Milt Bob White nnd the wounded
young Bob White, and so st length
he came to the fallen, hollow fence
post. His shprp nos# told him at
once that wounded young Bob White
was inside. Such a disappointment:
It filled ‘Reddy with rage. He hated
that fence post, which, of course, was
a very foolish thing to do. He took
a long sniff, and his mouth watered
as the scent of that young Bob White
just beyond his reach tickled his nose.
He snarled as he dug at the end of
that old fence post with his claws.
But that was quite useless and he
knew It. The outside of that old
fence post Was solid. It was only
the hea^t of It that had rotted away.
Reddy ran around to the other end.
That was closed. Then carefully he
examined the whole length of that
old fence post. You see, he hoped
there might be a thin rotted place
which he could dig open. But there
wasn’t. He tried reaching in with a
paw as far as he could. He couldn't
reach quite far enough. That young
Bob White was as safe from him as
if he were a mile away.
Presently Reddy realized how fool
ishly his rage was. He sat down to
think things o«'er. *He knew that
somewhere near was Mrs. Bob White.
But he knew that it was quite useless
to try to find her and catch her. He
gritted his teeth as he thought of
how she had fooled him by pretending
OitaMs la the Blackest Shadow Crouched

to be wounded. Then he tried to
think of eom* plan for catching either
that j'oung Bob White or hie mother.
Reddy know* all about mother love.
Many time* has he seen mother* risk
their live* for their children.
"The thing for me to do." eald he
to him*elf. "1* to hide cloee by. Mr*.
Bob White won't be able to etay
away from that wounded youngster
very long. Perhaps that youngster
himself will come and look for hia
mother. In either case I ought to be
able to get that Bob White dinner
I was so sure of * few minutes sgo."
So Reddy flattened himself on the
around In the blackest of the Black
Shadows close to the old fallen fence
post snd prepared to wait patiently.
The stars caine out and sprinkled the
sky with little points of light. By
and by gentle Mistress Moon came
creeping up from behind the Green
forest and flooded the Green Mead
oxi with soft* silvery Tight. There
' never was a more peaceful scene. It
didn't seem as if there could possibly
be anything but haprlness and rest
ful peace there. Tet Inside that hol
low fence a young Bob White crou^i
ed, suffering from wounds and fnwn
terrible fright. Outstde In the black
est shadow crouched Reddy Fox, pa
tiently waiting for a Bob White din
ner. And a little way off a little
brown mother, Mrs. Bob White,
watched and listened snd waited, too.
And wiih every moment she grew
more anxious.
Time slipped away. Mrs. Bob White,
wise In the ways of Reddy Fox. did
not go to the suffering young Bob
Whit* despite the longing in her
heart. The wounded young Bob
White remained right where he was.
He knew that he was safe. Reddy
