Tax Evaders Are
Being Deteeted
Rr\enue Agents Inspect Hank
Accounts, Collector Warns
—Blanks Mailed.
A special elaborate system of catch
ing income tax evaders is being put
into operation here and elsewhere by
the federal internal revenue depart
ment. Collector A. B. Allen said yes
terday.
"Men and women who think they
are too smart for the government may
find themselves caught before long."
he said. "Internal revenue agents are
given power to examine bank ac
counts. records of county and city
treasurers, registers of deeds and so
on,
"Doubtless there are many w ho
think they ate getting away with
something but these evasions are
never outlawed and the agents are
working constantly and bringing evad
ers to Justice." he said.
Mr. Allen, correcting the statement
made recently by a public speaker
that "92 cents of every dollar of In
come tax goes for the expense of col
lecting it" showed by the government
report that it cost only $1.07 to collect
each $100 of income tax last ye.-y.

John Jesperson brought a shipment
1 of lambs to the local market yester
day from Cortland that averaged 75
pounds and sold for $14 SO a hundred,
ihe top price for the day. The con
i signment was sent to feed In a corn
| field 02 days ago. They cost at that
i time $13.65 a hundred and averaged
56 pounds.
The sioer market was topped by
I'rink Ketz of Marne. la., who
brought in a shipment of 31 head of
heavy llcrefords that averaged 1,385
pounds, for which he received $9.85 a
hundred. The cattle will he shipped
east, having been bought by an order
buyer for shipment.
Thor Flotra of Petersburg was on
the market with both cattle and hogs.
The cattle averaged 1.24S pounds and
sold for $8.15 a hundred, while the i
hogs showed an average of 2C3
pounds and brought $8.25 a hundred.
"I bought these cattle on the local
market SO days ago,” said Mr. Flotra.
"They cost me Jti.iO a hundred and
averaged at that time 950 pounds.
Today they averaged 1.248 pounds.
“These cattle were put in the corn
field, where T kept them for three
weeks after which 1 put them in the
feed lot, with a full feed of corn and
alfalfa hay. The gains, both In
weight and price prove to me that
cattle feeding has been a paying
proposition this season."
