Bankers of State
.Want Mever Namec
Head of Reserve
Claim Made That Present
Director of Finance Cor
poration Knows Needs
of Agriculture.
A utrong movement in favor of the
nolcction of Eugene Meyer, jr., ai
htail of the Federal Reserve yiem
liat begun among the country banki
of Nebraska. Kesolutiont have been
adopted by groups six and seven of
the .Nebraska Tafi-.ters' association
asking that Mr. Meyer, who if man'
iiing director of the War Finance
corporation, be made a member of
the I edcral Reserve board.
This results from the success of the
War Finance corporation in halting
the deflation of agriculture through
loans made on farm paper. Farmers
who have been bitter toward the
policies of W. P. G. Harding, gov
ernor of the reserve board, whose
term is about to expire, feel that both
the attitude and understanding of Mr.
Meyer wher the middle west is con
cerned are more promising.
"Many state banks want to join the
rederal Reserve system, but not un
rlcr its present administration," said
J. M. Flann igan, former president
of the State Bankers' association and
executive secretary of the finance cor
poration, yesterday. "In Nebraska
there are 163 national banks and
1.000 state banks. The resources of
the state banks equal those of the
national banks, it is a reasonable
development that they should all (ret
together and join the Federal Re
serve system. Many prominent state
bankers who have steadfastly main
tained that the Federal Reserve sys
tem stands for everything that is
pood in banking and finance say that
the only reason they don't join is
its management.
'The country bankers, who make
the great part of the loans to farm
ers, feel that the man .at the head
of this system should be thoroughly
acquainted with every business need.
The agricultural interests of the na
tion must be served if we are to en
joy prosperity.
'City and commercial banking is
one function and agricultural banking
is another. The record of Mr. Meyer,
both during the war and his conduct
of the War Finance corporation in
the past trying year, has won him the
confidence of the farming section."
