Whenever busincia or pleasure calk
U9 to Lincoln, we always put up at the
Clifton House, which, under the man
agement of Mr. fjnsign, is to our miad
the best place in that city to get first-
class accommodation at reasonable
prices.
exteaeive prairie fire occurred yes-,

west of town. Mr. Kirk wood lost con
siderable property, consisting of stable,

"H. E. P." sends us an article with
out anything to indicato who the writer
may be. Wo will here repeat for the
hundredth time that it is a waste of
paper and ink to send anonymous ar
ticles to this office.
It is about time that something was
dooe towards-haviug that ugly looking
hole on the corner north of the Court
Houe, filled. To say nothing about the
looks of the thing, there is dauger that
some unlucky chap will got a broken leg
or neck some of these dark nights.
H. C. Wheeler, formerly of lied
Cloud, has removed with his family to
Edgar, Clay Co., where he has an ap
pointment under the auspices of the M.
E. Church. Mr. Wheeler's many
friends wish him success in his new lo
cation. We arc making arrangements to en
large and otherwise improve The
Chief, intending to bring, it up to the
Uadard of beiag the largest and best
county newspaper west of Lincoln. It
will take soiue time and considerable
extra labor to bring this change about,
and in the meantime the paper will bo
rather slim. We ask the indulgence of
our readers until we are ready 6 "loom
up."
It may be taken us an evidence of
the growth and prosperity of Red Cloud
that the school house is entirely too
small for the present requirements of the
school district. A great mistake was
made in erecting a building only large
enough for the year in which it was
built. It is now too lato to discuss that
side of the question, anf all wo can now
do is to make preparation for present
necessities, and at the same time look
ahead to the building of a school house
that will afford ample accommodation
for the future. It is time that this mat
ter should receive serious consideration.
