We went down to hear Chaplain
Wright on the temperance cause Fri
day eyening and were very much dis
appointed to be put off with a Magic
Lantern show. We had particularly
desired to hear his views on this mat

cilliation all over the world elsewhere,
the irreconcilables of Plattsmouth gat
on their ear and divide the town and
evpry good work more hoplely than
ever.

Where did the Chronicle get the
authority for saying that Mayor John
son said he gave the saloon keeper's
the benefit of the doubt on the passage
of the License Ordinance. He said no
such thing, moreover he has no vote
in the Councel unless a tie and it is
his duty to enforce such ordinance and
resolutions as they may pass, without
question, unless so clearly absurd and
illegal that the whole community
would sustain him in a veto, or nulli
fication. If any professional gentleman is
desirous of claiming the term
half-
fledged,' they are welcome. The peo
ple know we did not mean the persons
named in the Chronicle, unless they
wish to claim the honor of drawing
that shambling 8500 ordinance that
wouldn't hold water before Perry Gass,
even. Judge Sullivan is not a. law
yer but tlie temperance cause would
be helped greatly if the advice of as
sound and honest meu as he, had been
taken. A little boy friend of the Her
ald's was the author of a speech fun
ny enough to find its way to Harper's
Drawer. He went up to Lincoln with
his mother a few weeks ago. His con
versational poweis arc rather excep
tionally good, and a friend who had of
ten been amused by his chatting sent
for him to como and see her. His
mother arrayed him in a clean suit
and after taking a final suivey and
giving him probably the usual mother
ly injunction of -"be a good boy," she
added "and don't tell all you know," to
which he gravely responded. "Well, I
won't if they don't ask me."
A fellow calling himself Thomas
Morau sold Charley Holmes a fine 3
year old grey colt last week. He told
a straight story about living near Glen
wood and wanting a smaller horse to
herd with. Holmes give him ten dol
lars to fasten the bargain and told him
when he could show good title to the
horse he could have the rest. Instead
of that he lit out with the 810. He
has been arrested and is now in jail
here, ne undoubtedly has had some
man's horse. He is about 23, medium
heighth, black hair, cut short, mustache,
small side whiskers, weight about 140
lbs. Any information of man or horse
is wanted by the sheriff at once.
A magnificent stud of beautiful
trained horses and ponies with Dan
Rices circus led by the wonderfnl
blind horse Excelsior and hose funny

Some foolish people telegraphed all
over the Country that Plattsmouth
gained a great temperance victory this
spring in the election. We never
could see just where the victory came
in, there beinsr two high and two low
license councilmen elected, which
would be a stand off. Mr. Pollock,
however, was .really elected by the
votes and work of such men as John
Fitzgerald and R. C. Cushing not red
ribbon men and by a clear red-ribbon
vote could never have been elected.
The city officers were not red-ribbon
men except the marshal. Be that as
it may, as a true temperance paper we
cannot afford to claim such a victory
that has resulted in lower license,
more saloons, more whisky drank and
more cutting and deviltry than we
ever heard of before.

To The Public
Having closed my business up and
being about to move to Louisville, I
desire to state a few facts showing my
treatment here and reasons for leaving.
At the city election I had proposed to
vote what was called the temperance
ticket, but I had not shouted about
temperance on the street corners. I
was coolly informed that I could not
vote and I have lived twenty three
years in this county. My name was
not on the Registry list, and I have
done business here two years and al
ways voted before.
I feel hurt and wronged at this, and
when the county-seat election came,
did not propose to vote at all, in fact
refused to vote early in the day on the
ground I was not a voter. Later in
the day, at the request jf Mr. Dovey,
I did vote walking up to the polls
and depositing a folded ballot as I had
always done at elections. The cry
was raised at once that I had voted
for Weeping Water and all their lead
ers in county seat and terrperauce. at
once withdrew their patronage from
my butcher shop, causing my business
to fall off and not be profitable, and I
am about to leave for a town where a
man can exercise his manhood's rights,
the dearest privilege of a free-born
American citizen without being bull
dosed. I have been a temperance man all
my life and if this treatment is a good
way to build up a town, I can't see it.
I make this statement to correct errors
and prevent foolish stories.
F. M. Youxo.
Unfortunate Accident.
Last Wednesday afternoon during a
severe thunderstorm, D. D. Johnson of
Weeping Water, and a Mr. Instine, his
miller, were proceeding en the road
from this place to Weeping Water
when near Mr. Cames place a bolt of
lightning struck Mr. Instine killing
him instantly, it paralysed Johnson
and rolled him off the seat. As Dan
went over he threw np his hands, and
flung the reins out ori the prairie. A
boy in tbe hind end of the wagon tried
to get them, but being unable, jumped
out. The horses thoroughly frighten
ed were running at full speed. When
Johnson came to, he saw the horses
were making for a deep slough, full
of water, and fearing he would be
drowned rolled out of the wagon,
and lay insensible for some time in the
road. Reviving t. little he crawled,
down to where the horses had stuck in
the slough, got one out, mounted it
and rode to the nearest house where he
fainted again.
In the mean time the boy had arous
ed other neighbors who came on horse
back and rescuing the other horse, fi
nally got Johnson and with the body
of Instine proceeded to Weeping Wa
ter. Mr. Johnson is seriously injured,
and his recovery was for a long while
doubtful.
