We went down to hear Chaplain Wright on the temperance cause Fri day eyening and were very much dis appointed to be put off with a Magic Lantern show. We had particularly desired to hear his views on this mat ter. In the very day and hour of con cilliation all over the world elsewhere, the irreconcilables of Plattsmouth gat on their ear and divide the town and evpry good work more hoplely than ever. The fool killer Las not been around in Plattsmouth in a long time it woold seem. He is needed now with a ven- gance, or there is no peace and har- many this fcummer. Great complaint has been made to us that tbe County Jail is just alive with vermin. .In addition to its being so damp as to be deadly to the health of the inmates. Something must be done with that Jail. Oui old butcher, friend Hatt has built him a handsome new fly trap to enclose his meat in. It's a good meat trap to, you see and the only difference between it aud a regular fly-trap is that Hatt's keeps the flies out and the oth er keep's 'em in. F. M. Young, who has long been one of Plattsmouth's reliable butchers. left yesterday with his family to take up their residence in Louisville, where he proposes to continuet he but her bu siness, and buying ard shipping hogsi &c., in which place we wish him the success his integrity and industry mer it. A curious Assessment ren was found the other day. It was neecessa- ry to indicate that the party assessed was non-compos mentis at times and was filled up as follows. " I-crazy at times-do solemnly swear &c., the as sessor signing his own name thereto. One Dwinell. of Weeping Water has jumjied the country to escape trial for beating his wife and otherwise be having in a most shocking manner. From what we can learn he has been a sad drag upon the family the sons doing all the work of the farm, and he reaping the profit. Grand Fourth of Julv celebration at Plattsmouth. The vertitate and only Dan Rice the Pioneer Showman of America will celebrate the Ono Hun dred and second birth day of our in dependence in this city; come one and all. Three great performances; in the morning at 10 o'clock and at 2 and 7 p. m. Ob Friday the Hebald visited Mr. Harrison, the man who was hurt on the boat last week. Dr. Livingston has him enclosed in a plaster-of-paris bandage or jacket, and he looks much better than we expected to see him. There is a bare chance that he may live being a powerfully built man of excellent qualities. More fine riders, both ladies and gentlemen, more extraordinary gym nasts, leapers, acrooats, tunny clowns, &c, Ac, than any show before the pub lic to-day. Where did the Chronicle get the authority for saying that Mayor John son said he gave the saloon keeper's the benefit of the doubt on the passage of the License Ordinance. He said no such thing, moreover he has no vote in the Councel unless a tie and it is his duty to enforce such ordinance and resolutions as they may pass, without question, unless so clearly absurd and illegal that the whole community would sustain him in a veto, or nulli fication. If any professional gentleman is desirous of claiming the term half- fledged,' they are welcome. The peo ple know we did not mean the persons named in the Chronicle, unless they wish to claim the honor of drawing that shambling 8500 ordinance that wouldn't hold water before Perry Gass, even. Judge Sullivan is not a. law yer but tlie temperance cause would be helped greatly if the advice of as sound and honest meu as he, had been taken. A little boy friend of the Her ald's was the author of a speech fun ny enough to find its way to Harper's Drawer. He went up to Lincoln with his mother a few weeks ago. His con versational poweis arc rather excep tionally good, and a friend who had of ten been amused by his chatting sent for him to como and see her. His mother arrayed him in a clean suit and after taking a final suivey and giving him probably the usual mother ly injunction of -"be a good boy," she added "and don't tell all you know," to which he gravely responded. "Well, I won't if they don't ask me." A fellow calling himself Thomas Morau sold Charley Holmes a fine 3 year old grey colt last week. He told a straight story about living near Glen wood and wanting a smaller horse to herd with. Holmes give him ten dol lars to fasten the bargain and told him when he could show good title to the horse he could have the rest. Instead of that he lit out with the 810. He has been arrested and is now in jail here, ne undoubtedly has had some man's horse. He is about 23, medium heighth, black hair, cut short, mustache, small side whiskers, weight about 140 lbs. Any information of man or horse is wanted by the sheriff at once. A magnificent stud of beautiful trained horses and ponies with Dan Rices circus led by the wonderfnl blind horse Excelsior and hose funny mules, Pete and Barney. Some foolish people telegraphed all over the Country that Plattsmouth gained a great temperance victory this spring in the election. We never could see just where the victory came in, there beinsr two high and two low license councilmen elected, which would be a stand off. Mr. Pollock, however, was .really elected by the votes and work of such men as John Fitzgerald and R. C. Cushing not red ribbon men and by a clear red-ribbon vote could never have been elected. The city officers were not red-ribbon men except the marshal. Be that as it may, as a true temperance paper we cannot afford to claim such a victory that has resulted in lower license, more saloons, more whisky drank and more cutting and deviltry than we ever heard of before. New Peaches and apples at the P. O. J News Depot for the 4th of Jaly. rather Hayes Informed us that a eh'olt mission, or Triduum to be con ducted by the Her. Father Shaffer, S. J., will open at the Catholic Church here, Saturday morning, July 6th. An erroneous opinion prevails to a certain extent in Plattsmouth that Dan Rice is dead. The management desires us to state through our col umns that if Col. Dan Rice is not with the show, that the patrons of the cir cus will have their money refunded. -Mr. Murphy had a team run from the depot up Main Street to the High School building without doing any particular damage. -As Perry Walker, was returning from his farm near Weeping Water last Thursday afternoon, his wagon ran into a deep rut and threw him out breaking a rib, but he is now doing well we understand. The Omaha Herald, of yesterday morning says: "J; A. aiacsiurpny, ea- itor of the Plattsmouth Watchman, is at the Grand Central V Well, we al ways knew our "boss" was an aspiring man, but we didn't think he would at tempt such a lean as that, and within twenty miles of home too! -A week atro reports came to us of the damaged condition of crops in Seward and other western counties' and one of the Herald hands having more interest in a crop out there than in tvne stickine put out to see about it, but after a weeks trip comes back with the report that he never saw so fine a prospect for good crops, of every variety. On Tuesday Ed. Rosenbaum had a trial before Judge Gass, for violation of the law in selling liquor on Sunday, and was allowed a jury trial. The ju ry failing to agree were discharged and yesterday a new jury were sum moned, and the case was again tried. The Jury brought in a verdict of guil ty and the defendant was fined 825 and costs, but gave notice of an appeal. Fersonal. W. J. Hesser eoes to Indiana, to see tbe folks, this week. Parmele got himself all dressed up nice enough lor a preacner ana went to Beatrice to spend Sunday with' Billy Agnew. Herbert M. Bushnell, for a short time connected with this paper has severed that connection, and goes to the Chronicle. Uncle Thomas Jefferson Todd came in to see us last week and we had the usual Temperance argument. He is sound in most things, is Uncle Thomas. loung Blackburn (Lino) is com plimented very highly on his address at the graduating exercises in Peru. It is said to have been the first on the occasion. Lino returns to the news paper service, being again the special correspondent of the Republican. Miss Carrie Bennett returned to Plattsmouth on Saturday last, the Commencement exercises of Brownell Hall, which school she has been at tending, closing tbe day before. Miss Carrie has attended to her studies very closely and lias made rapid progress wo understand. Mr. Wm. Wise left us Saturday morning fcr a short trip to Pueblo, and Colorado Springs, thense to Denver and home. "Will" is one of the most active and energetic young men we have, of first rate character; and we hope he may have a first rate enjoy able trip, full of interest and informa tion and return to his work with re newed vigor and enlarged experience. To The Public Having closed my business up and being about to move to Louisville, I desire to state a few facts showing my treatment here and reasons for leaving. At the city election I had proposed to vote what was called the temperance ticket, but I had not shouted about temperance on the street corners. I was coolly informed that I could not vote and I have lived twenty three years in this county. My name was not on the Registry list, and I have done business here two years and al ways voted before. I feel hurt and wronged at this, and when the county-seat election came, did not propose to vote at all, in fact refused to vote early in the day on the ground I was not a voter. Later in the day, at the request jf Mr. Dovey, I did vote walking up to the polls and depositing a folded ballot as I had always done at elections. The cry was raised at once that I had voted for Weeping Water and all their lead ers in county seat and terrperauce. at once withdrew their patronage from my butcher shop, causing my business to fall off and not be profitable, and I am about to leave for a town where a man can exercise his manhood's rights, the dearest privilege of a free-born American citizen without being bull dosed. I have been a temperance man all my life and if this treatment is a good way to build up a town, I can't see it. I make this statement to correct errors and prevent foolish stories. F. M. Youxo. Unfortunate Accident. Last Wednesday afternoon during a severe thunderstorm, D. D. Johnson of Weeping Water, and a Mr. Instine, his miller, were proceeding en the road from this place to Weeping Water when near Mr. Cames place a bolt of lightning struck Mr. Instine killing him instantly, it paralysed Johnson and rolled him off the seat. As Dan went over he threw np his hands, and flung the reins out ori the prairie. A boy in tbe hind end of the wagon tried to get them, but being unable, jumped out. The horses thoroughly frighten ed were running at full speed. When Johnson came to, he saw the horses were making for a deep slough, full of water, and fearing he would be drowned rolled out of the wagon, and lay insensible for some time in the road. Reviving t. little he crawled, down to where the horses had stuck in the slough, got one out, mounted it and rode to the nearest house where he fainted again. In the mean time the boy had arous ed other neighbors who came on horse back and rescuing the other horse, fi nally got Johnson and with the body of Instine proceeded to Weeping Wa ter. Mr. Johnson is seriously injured, and his recovery was for a long while doubtful. A choice, selected and new stock of clothing just received at Stadelmann s; go and look at them before you buy from any other man. lOtf. The Fourth at Weeping Water. Hon.
