The .Bridge Eeport.
At last we have the celebrated report
on M.L. White's bridges before us
As long as the committee were at
work, or there was a prospect that a
committee would report on these
Lrid-es. the Herald has refrained
from making any comments. Now
that a competent body, of examiners
have examined these bridges and re
ported the facts, and just about as the
lltr-ALD stated them long ago, we
shall for once indulge ourselves in a
plight crow.
These bridges having been accurate
ly and scientifically measured by en
gineers who under oath, certify that
they over-run the measurement of the
Commissioners by 33 feet and 2 inches.
This proves conclusively that the Com
missioners always measured to save
the County and if they erred, it was on
tl.a .side of the people. An accurate
in .uieuient would give Mr. White
about 6267 more than he has received
fr;rn the measure of the other two
Commissioners.
We come now to the actual work. This
report disposes of th complaint that
tLe bridges could not be identified and
r.ic uured. Every bridge is numbered,
urA the section, town, and range giv
cn. Any one that chooses, can veri
ly this measurement. The length,
width, height, and wings are given.
At this time it matters not how they
Mvre let, whether Mr. White superin
tended the work or job for the County,
or took the contract, the question is.
lYi'l Cass County need these bridge;
and were they well and ecoaomically
built?
To the first part, the numerous peti
tions filed answer, yes.
To the second, the report says they
nr unexceptianably well luilt and
wider than usual so that reapers and
j'i'-.t r can pass over them, a great con-v-:iience
to farmers.
THE PRICE.
dvertisements for building these
. i idges were put in both county papers
for weeks. The lowest cash bid was
57.00 per foot.
The only party offering to take or
!crs bid 68.85 per foot and orders at
; cents. Mr. While built the bridges
ait 67.00 in orders, and if figures don't
Jii it saved the county S4.000.
Much useless fault finding has been
expended on these bridges and a whole
sue charge of extravagance hurled at
The com'rs. totally without foundation,
.ilad the com'rs. desired to waste mon
y for the county, they only had to or
Jrr tli report of all the proceedings
for the past two years to be printed, as
was largely petitioned for, and they
could have gut away with $1500 or $1G
00 of the peoples' money and given the
printer a fat job besides. On the
whole they have been a fairly econom
ical board.

Mr. A. L. llrown, a member of this
committee was called away. We
therefore give a recapitulation of
bridges he assisted in examining and
measuring. Uridges 1, 2, 3, 10 and JJ4
are low bridges, and have no side rail
ing, there being no necessity for it; all
of the foregoing bridges except those
spoken of are railed and coated with
coal-tar for the preservation of tlie
material. These bridges are well built
of good sound material, irmly braced.
Each and every bridge have mud-sills,
20 ft. long.and set as deep in the ground
as the bed of the stream which the
bridge spans. The posts of all these
bridges are of seasoned white oak; the
bents are well framed and fliuned to
gether, also the lljor of the bridges is
bolted down through the outside joist,
and through cap of tho bent, to pre
vent the tloring and joist from being
carried away if the water in the stream
should rise sutlieiently high to cover
the fkonng. This plan of bolting the
floors of bridges to the bents, for the
safety of the bridges in the time of
sudden rises of water in the streams,
was fully demonstrated in bridge No.
10. The settler who lives south of this
bridge told us that this bridge was en
tirely covered with water for some
time and that the creek bottom was
a sea of water for nearly two hours,
and that lie supposed the bridge was
carried away, but' when the watcis
subsided the bridge was still standing,
and hai not been damaged by the flood
of water as it still retains its align
ment. When this bridge was located
it was set for height the same as the
rest of the bridges built that sea-
