They make assertions and ex pect people to swallow them a- f.ets. Ai."nsr too lati;. The Omaha FiiiLUcnn has at la.-t ascertained, when it is almo.-t too 1 ito to u anything in tho 11 new departure" business, that the proper w.iy to treat the question of the adoption or rejection of the new Constitution is by ''dispas sionate and convir-.cin i areu'iicr:t." We v.-i-leome the KipuWc in to this platform, an 1 only wi.-h it had cotnmeneed on that line eailier in the campaign. nii At:r. iiitv? The Omaha lUpuUicin asks "who is working for the Constitution," and an swers it as follows : "They are simply a company of oSicc seekers, who are starvimr for some office, and who would be willing to run the State in debt hundreds of thousands of dollars if their nice little arranocmeut, j VJ2I'23 MIEfi, can be canied out.' I a- UaiiUi- j-m. Yet a portion of these are the men j who were elected in Omaha as the brains of the couniy, regardless of party; men elected for their worth , men whom the Hepulh'cnn and Herald endorsed as the men of talent, and men whom they claimed as the strong men of the Con vention. Verily, it does make a difier ence who.-e 'ox is gored. Mrs. Irish is taking orders in this city for Howe & Middletou's Oil Chromo Portraits of Wadnngton, Mrs. Wash- it. l-ton, Lincoln. Grant, Sherman, D rug las, Webster, Clay, Jackson and Wed 03 and for two beautiful chromos entitled "Chiit Blessing Little Children," and "Aidi'mg a Dles.-ing," a scene at the breakfast table of an American farmer, from the original by F. O. C. Darh-y, dengue ! and painted expre.-s'y for and published by Howe i; Middletonof Cin cinnati. The ma.-terhy works of this eminent artist, F. O. C. Parley, have won him a reputation alike at home and abroad unequalled by that of any other of our countrymen. It is moreover an American homo scene one which we all delight to see illu.-tratcd by art, and this, too. so vivid that iu.-tinetively the hearts of tho l ure' and refined among our people cannot I ut go out iu thank fulness to him who, by the charm of his genius, has created for them so much enjoyment. The chromos cf Washington and Mrs. Washington are from the original Gil bwit Stuart's celebrated paintings now in the Boston Atheneum, aud are by every one acknowledged the best por traits cf the Wash'ngtons ever painted. The city of Boston has repeatcd'y been offered SO.OOO for the pair, but money camot buy them. How faithful the copies are to the great original is at tested by the r -commendations from the highest authorities in the country. Grant, Lincoln, Sherman, or any other nP tli. nbovrt named oorttaits, are tho be.-t ever made. No one should fail to give their order for some of these chromos, as the price which they are sold at is very low, and it is a wonder to us how they can be offered at such J 1 figure. They are all nicely framed. Taken all in all, we consider them the handsomest work of art ever brought to this city. hand DEAI.r.i! The election iu Colorado yesterday went Kepublieau by increa.-ed majorities. tiis: rnoiiii;:n". For the Perald. This is an ago of improvement. The "march of improvement" is made in double quick lime. In many of the States law has been dealt out iu a boun tiful manner in regard to the sale c f in toxieatieg liquors. Legislators thought that the unrc.-tricted sale of liquor was dangerous and hence they set themselves at work to regulate. They see the aw ful haYDC and ravages of alcohol. L'.ke the line of Bonaparte's retreat, the path is stio-.en with ruin and death. They see manhood's strong frame decay. In searching for the headquarters of this evil we naturally fix our eyes on the place this poison is retailed. Here petty politicians often re.-ort to display their talents and wi.-dom ; here the lounger fiaJs something which enables him to forget the slow moving hours; here young men congregate for festivity aud reveling and the place of retail becomes the rendezvous of idleness, dissipation and riot. The vender ca.-ts about for everything that will attract attention, and thus bring persons in sight and smell of his fiery liquors. If a circus manager comes to town he tries to per suade hint that the next lot is the tmr-t eligible place in town. He provides rooms for jugglers and vagabond exhibit ors, lie is patriotic it gtioves his very soul to see anniversaries and great victo ries forgotten ; he is a patron of litera ture subscribes for the papers which at tract many to his p'aee and promotes the sale of his liquors ; he sets forth tables to, playing various games, and ere. ts a bull alley ; but does he allow gambling ! I.yeargus never laid down his laws with m ue sti ictness ; there sliail oe no tier ting only for the drinks. The atmos phere oi a retail shop is as dangerous as the Upas. Here everything that is lovely is blasted, aud many who might have lived for a nobler purpo c and blessed their country with noble deeds, become festering masses of physical and moral corruption. .Millions of treasure has gone down the yawning abyss. Six hundred millions of dollars are annually worse titan wasted in the United States. We are surely and slowly coming up to a Christian an 1 a Na'ional obligation. The hearts of the people are lv coming fixed in regard to the great principles of prohibition. In view of the difficulties W. MARSHALL, A?ent. a.
