The Missoury Valley Life Insurance
Company is about to erect a magnificent
edifice in Leavenworth, Kansas, valued
at $7;,000. It is to be 72x125, three
.stories high, with basement and .1an

thought by buyers that the price ran too

The Nebraska City Chronicle says :

Mr. J. F. Keeney, who opened a
meat market in this city some time

The bridge on sixth street should be
immediately repaired, it is one of the
principal thoroughfares for farmers and
is now in a very dangerous condition.

dences throughout the town trees, new
palings, cornices, etc., seem to be the
order of improvement.

day, seeking investment in Plattsmouth

Mr. Patrick Maxwell has removed his

tion of the fact that Mattie Lee, one
of the demi-monde who vibrates be

thrown from a buggy in that city and
seriously injured a few days since.
Probably this accounts for the sudden
departure of one of our citizens.
The paternal ancestors of our worthy
friend W. J. Hesser gave us a call this
morning. Himself and his estimable
lady are here on a visit to their son.
They live in Jay county, Indiana.

We learn that Mesr. Paul Hill, F.
W. I. Ilotbrook, John Christiansen,

Ashland.

They are having a huge time over the
transfer business at Omaha and Council
Bluffs. We think the Iowa roads will all
compromise by coming down to i 1 itts
luouth, where a bridge can be built for
one-fourth the money that it would take
at any other point on the river.
One of our daily subscribers at Ashland
complains of not getting his paper regu
larly. It is sentcvery day. Will the P.
M. at Ashland look the matter up ?
We learn that a new agricultural so
ciety of some kind is being organized at
Ashland. We did not ascertain the par
ticulars, but think the "bachelors" are
mixed up with it in some way. We re
fer those desirous of information to L.
L. Hoi brook, C. II. Walker, or Marcus
Buish, of Ashland.
At the meeting of the Bepublican
State Committee last Wednesday it was
decided to hold the next State Conven
tion at Lincoln, on Wednesday the 10th
day of August, and the apportionment
for representation was based upen the
Bepublican vote for President in 1868.
The call, embracing the representation
to which each county is entitled, will ap
pear as soon as we get an t ffieial list of
the organized counties of the Sta'e.
A countryman entered a doctor's office
in the city, and taking a "level tumbler
full of alcohol," which he mistook for
whiskey, drank it down at one gulp, then
turned and walked out. An hour after
waid, wh le the doctor was expecting a
summon to view the body of the rash
countryman, in walked that individual.
"Doctor," said he, "can't you srar' me
another tumblerful ? Its the most satis
fyingest I ever drunk."
Mr. Azro Smith laid us under obliga
tions to-day, by presenting us with some
of the finest lettuce and radishes it has
ever been our good fortune to sec. One
head of the lettuce alone weighed half
a pound. There is no country like Ne
braska for nature's products, and Mr.
Smith excel in their cultivation.
The Omaha Rrpublican says three hun
dred school mams who start from San
Francisco on an excursion to Boston next
Saturday, will be "Hitched" by the Burl
ington & Missonr. Biver Bailroad on their
arrival at Omaha. Those school mams
know what's what when they travel.

The adjourned session of the District
Court- for this county will commence

We understand the work of grading
Fourth street through to Oak street will
lie commenced at once.
New houses are springing up in every
nart of the city. We believe the im
provement in this city will be greater this
year than for the past five years, all ad
ded together.
Fitzgerald has a large force at work
grading on Pearl and Granite streets. A
good road to the lower landing will soon
be completed.
Vivian & Palmer are shipping 3,000
bushels of corn.
Chicago newspapers are excluded from
the Ohio Penitentiary. The Warden
endorsed on one recently sent there th s
following: "This paper is not admitted
into the Ohio Penitentiary. The man
to whom it is addressed is here for the
murder of his wife, and do not wish to
have him further corrupted byany such
publication as this. Please discontinue
it." We presume it was Democratic.
Hesser's Green llou.-:e plants are all
the rage now. Omaha, Council Bluffs,
Nebraska City, Lincoln, Ashland and
Fremont, all draw from it, and every
body says h's plants are superior to any
thing in the we.-t. He filled a $50 order
for Lincoln last evening, and is constant
ly filling for dealers in the other cities.
