Phelps, Furnas, Gosper, Frontier, lted Willow, Hitchcock, Hayes, Chase and Dundy. Tho method proposed is viz: Tlio" above works will require fifteen men to nln it. Arrangements have been made so that the owners df the sorg hum works will hire tlidso to do tho labor who wish to study tho business. The instruction will lo given "by ono of tho Professors in the Agricultural College. Tho above works are located two miles northeast ot Lincoln, adjoining the farm belonging to the Agricultural Collogo. Tho works aro to bo run en tirely by steam, and will average 500 gallons of finished syrup per day. That some idea may bo gained of what is proposed to bn done in tho way of instruction, the following list of ex poiiments and work is given: 1st. Test tho strength of juice frem soveral lots of cane with Leaume's sacharometer. !2d. Test the samo after dolTecation. itd. Weigh cane, and after bing pressed, ascertain the per cent, of juice extracted. 4th. Ascortain tho number of gallons of juice to make one of syrup from dif ferent lots of cane. 5th. Ascertain tlio weight of a gallon of syrup finished to different degrees of density. (1th. Take two samples of syrup hot from thb evaporator; cool ono quickly and tho other very slowly, and note the difference in color and fiavor. 7th. Heat to a boding point a quan tity of juice that has not been treated with lime, and noto tho temperature at which fiocculont coagulation takes place, also at what temperature the Hikes begin to riso; the amount that rises to tho surface, and the amount that settles to the bottom, 8th. Take a quantity of juice that has been treated with lime, and make tho samo tests as in No. 7, noting the difference. Oth. Take several samples equally treated with lime bring tho first to a boiling point as quickly as possible the others at increasing periods of time to ono hour; give time to sottlo and noto'difforouce in defl'ecation. 10th. Take two samples equally treated with limo; heat tho llrsi very slowly (ofiocculent formation, then rap idly to the boiling point. Tho second, heat rapidly to the point of fiocculont formation, and then slowly to tho boil ing; give time to settle and nolo differ ence in clarification. 11th. Treat a sample of juice with limo boyond the noutTiil point; heat to boiling and noto the effect. This givo an outline, and thoro will bo given a few lectures in addition. Thoro will bo used ono of tho best arrangements for burning baggasseo that has boon invented, which can be used on small or largo works alike. The experiments with juice will bo made in glass test tubes, ho that the changes will be visible to tho eye. Any further information will be cheerfully given, on addressing a letter to 11.
