Last week we published an item which, in effect, stated that a driver on Oten's hack line, between Brownville and Tecumseh.had refused to let a col ored woman take passage on his wagon. In this our informant was mistaken. Xb such. thing occurred on Mr. Oten's line, who says colored people are just as welcome to rido on his vehicles as anybody else. "We gladly make the correction for our old friend Barney, who accommodates everybody that travels with hira in the best manner ho is caixable- and bis facilities will al low. Our impression of the legislature this winter is that it was one of the best and most conscientious that ever assembled in the State. Both houses seem to be principally composed of -representative men of the people, who aim, without much show of demagog uery, to do the will of their constituents. If they have not done much in the way of useful legislation it is attributable, we believe to thelack of time. Forty days is too short a time now, with Nebras ka's increasing population and diversi fied interests, for an effective legisla tive session, especially when it embrac es a senatorial election. The sessions should be increased to about sixty days. The Advertiser can cordially say to its legislative readers of this session: "Well" done good and faithful servants." E53H5HSE323 t-irjm, w-atiL wif'ViUfl&iiaaujJMAagB The 2 2d of February in Brctwiiville,. ' Tho fertile and practical brain of Prof. "Wilson, principal of the Brown ville High School, conceived the idea of instilling more deeply patriotism in tho minds of his pupils, and therefore arranged exercises for the whole school, celebrating the anniversary of the "Father of his country." Outsido this, the citizens contented themselves with a grand display of flags, which were thrown to the breezo at an early hour and continued, during the day. At two o'clock in the afternoon, the entire schools of the city formed in procession at the high school building, each department in charge of its teach er. The procession passed in order, to the opera houso, where interesting pro ceedings were had, consisting in, recita tions, declamations, vocal and instru mental music appropriate to the day and occasion. The Brownville silver cornet band volunteered its. services and added as it always does, greatly to the enjoyment of those in attendance. The opera house was crowded with scholars, parents, patrons and friends. Inclination would lead us to a full and detailed report and publication of all that transpired, but time and space for bid. The exercises were opened with a declamation from "Webster on the char acter of "Washington, by Oliver Lor ance. Miss Mamie Carson followed with a brief, welt prepared, and exceett ingly interesting history of him who was "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." A solo, "A thousand years, my own Col umbia," by Miss Belle Morris, who has just returned from Chicago, where she has been spending a season under musi cal instruction; full chorus by the school. A quartette, "Star spangled banner," by Miss Morris, Miss Furnas, Mr. McXaughton and Prof: Wilson, chorus by the school. Song, "Bally around the flag," by Misses McXaugh ton, Hoover and Blount. "Washington's Farewell Address was impressively read by Miss Minnie Mercer. After which sentiments were presented by pu pils from one department to another and responses given. Also from the schools to the school board, the city, bar, press, medical profession, band, and ministry. Ex-Senator Tipton spoke comparing the unostentatious inaugur ations of the first presidents to tho pa geantry that attend tho inaugurations of the present time. Ex-Governor Furnas gave a brief history of the Brownville schools.buildings, and early educational incidents. Sentiments had been sent the State Xornr.il School, at Peru, and tho public school at Xemaha City. Be sponses were received by letter and tel egraph and read. The occasion was an enjoyable one, long to be remembered, especially by the little ones of the school and city.
