old settlers inform us that some seven
years since, Hnllum, of Glen Rock,
in digging a well, came upon a vein
of galena, and that it has been well

On Monday last R. V. Mulr
thought it somewhat singular that
his cow, whose habits are usually
very regular, had not been home for
some twenty-four hours. He accord
ingly instituted a search and in (lie
e ening found her, tail downwards, in
a drv well, some twentv-five or thit-'
ty feet deep, the well being located
on the lot corner of First ami Allan-!
tic streets. The news soon spread
and gathered a crowd, who hastily
improvised a derrick and drew the
poor beast from its confined condi
tion. The first effort, proved the der-
riek to be too low, ami she had to be
lowered and a new hitch taken.
When drawn up the cow, and citizens
surrounding, seemed to give vent to a
sigh of relief, but the poor animal
was unable to use her limbs, nor will .
i-he be able to frewly exercise them for
i
Miiijf days. It i supposed that she
fell into the pit fall sometime during
Sunday night and been a captive
Mime thirty hours.
On Tuesday we had the pleasure j
of an interview with Dr. Converse,
who arrived here by the morning
train and returned by the noon buss.
The Dr. say. that the panic has not
directly affected the parties with
whom he is identified, but that the
general paralysis experienced in the
commercial world has caused sus
pension of eff rt upon their part in
volving an expansion of credit. He
says that his advices from Smith tfc
Co. are to the effect that, in their
judgment, the storm ha subsided,
and, though Mime clearing up show
ers may come, no serious apprehen
sions need be felt. He says, further,
that no doubt need be entertained but
what the intere.-ts of the M. P., the

will shortly be cotiMilidated. and the
two latter built. The interests repre
senting theo tkoiough fares are but
awaiting bauk resumption ami the
consequent quiet ingjof the commer
cial waters to commence work. The
Dr. says he has no doubt of the com
pletion of the B., Ft. K. & P. R. P-.
to the eouutj- line, by the first of
March, prox., and the biiiltling of the
Trunk iu or during tlu&yeai 1S74.

DEAD.
It Is Indeed with painful pmntions
that we to-day record the demise of
Sfrs. W. D. Blacklmrn, which event
took place at 5 o'clock on Tuesday
morning hist.
Mrs. B. has been quite 111 for some
time past.- At times it seemed as
though the vital spark had feaily gone
out, when Bhe would' rally, aud
her devoted relatives and friends
would be buoyed up with the hope
that her natural sitting" constitution,
and hopeful disposition would' master
her disease. But the careful nursing
o f father, mother, sister and other re
latives, and the zealous scientific at
tention of physicians did not avail
against the inroddgrof the disease nor
prevail against the dread messenger,
death. As we write she lies cold and
lifeless aid dark shadows suround the
hearts of all who knew her in life.
For weeks inquires as to her condi
tion passed from mouth to ear of all
our people, snowing a tender regard
for the sick nnd her kinfolk. When
she filed the news deemed to spread
with the atmnphere, and a generaf
gloom prevailed over society.
The writer had no acquaintance
with the deceased-,- but we are? inti
mate with bet lereaved father, and
having once suffererf L under a like af-

weight ofithe- dispensation now ner-
inVnpn"him and bis'. It is natural
for the wounded sofcto$rrIev, mi

'God giveth 'and God taketh away."
Though dead toTlmel she is alive to
Eternity. She has but gone before
lav"Ii'ig the bereaved with one less
representative on earth but giving one
more? In Heaven
