The fact is that whether pin chases
at the prices named above were wise
or not for the parties making them,
the ordinary farmer has no need to
trouble himself about them. Ani
mals of just as much value for his
use can be purcha-ed at comparative
ly low prices ; such prices as very
many farmers can afford to pay. A
bull calf, six months old, of undoubt
ed pure pedigree, of good form and of
nearly or quite as much value to the:
stock breeder or dairyman or general i
farmer, as would be the mo-it fa-hion-i
ably bred animal, can be bought, of
either the .Short Horn, llevon, Ayr
shire or Jersey breed for from $100 to
$lf0. Well bred and good Berkshire,
Poland-China pigs, or those of other
well known breeds, can be bought for
$25 each, and lambs of Leicester, Cots
wold, .South-Down or Merino sheep
for the same price. .Such prices as
these will not bankrupt a farmer who
Is breeding stock. .Sunpo-e a farmer
raises IU calves ayear. It certainly i.s
a very reasonable e-limate to s-ay that
the value of each calf sired by a good
bull over one sired by a poor one, at
$1",0 when a year old, or even when
full grown,

It is not necessary to buy a large
number of animals to commence with
but get a few and "grow" into a large
herd or Hock. Another point in
which wo think mistakes have often
been made is iu buying animals of

form of an animal, but a good idea
can be formed when the animal is
young, and the price is generally

We have been shown by Capt. Po
lock, Post Master of this city, who Is
the agent, one of the most convenient
and perfect stock brands we have ever
looked at. It is for branding on the
horn or hoof. Call and see it at the

Suel Foster, of Muscatine, Iown,
thinks that Western men, as a rule,
have been too much afraid of high
cultivation of orchards.
According to the Minnesota papers,
apples, plums, pears, grapes and
small fruits, are now grown over a
large portion of that State.
An apple tree in Niagara Co., X.Y.,
near Lockport, yielded twenty-live
barrels of fruit this year. It is fifty
3'ears old. and has yielded as many as
twenty barrels in previous years.
Grape-growing and wine making

Illinois. Mr. J. G. Schwarz of Jer
sey Co., raised the pat season, (50,000
pounds of grapes on five acres of vin
yard, and he has made 4,500 gallons
of wine.

moist through the season. Put them
in the cellar, if it is frost proof, and
when they are well started in the
