In one direction the publica tion of such statement-; may do harm by inducing -onie farmer-? to think thevvhole bust ness of improved -jiucl: is "a humbug, got up to put money in the pockets of a few. breeders and speculators." The fact is that whether pin chases at the prices named above were wise or not for the parties making them, the ordinary farmer has no need to trouble himself about them. Ani mals of just as much value for his use can be purcha-ed at comparative ly low prices ; such prices as very many farmers can afford to pay. A bull calf, six months old, of undoubt ed pure pedigree, of good form and of nearly or quite as much value to the: stock breeder or dairyman or general i farmer, as would be the mo-it fa-hion-i ably bred animal, can be bought, of either the .Short Horn, llevon, Ayr shire or Jersey breed for from $100 to $lf0. Well bred and good Berkshire, Poland-China pigs, or those of other well known breeds, can be bought for $25 each, and lambs of Leicester, Cots wold, .South-Down or Merino sheep for the same price. .Such prices as these will not bankrupt a farmer who Is breeding stock. .Sunpo-e a farmer raises IU calves ayear. It certainly i.s a very reasonable e-limate to s-ay that the value of each calf sired by a good bull over one sired by a poor one, at $1",0 when a year old, or even when full grown, cent on the gain over this to apply to paying the principal of the investment. It is not necessary to buy a large number of animals to commence with but get a few and "grow" into a large herd or Hock. Another point in which wo think mistakes have often been made is iu buying animals of mature age, and when at their highest price. Of course it gives some ad vantage to be able to see the mature form of an animal, but a good idea can be formed when the animal is young, and the price is generally very much-less." We have been shown by Capt. Po lock, Post Master of this city, who Is the agent, one of the most convenient and perfect stock brands we have ever looked at. It is for branding on the horn or hoof. Call and see it at the Post Office. Suel Foster, of Muscatine, Iown, thinks that Western men, as a rule, have been too much afraid of high cultivation of orchards. According to the Minnesota papers, apples, plums, pears, grapes and small fruits, are now grown over a large portion of that State.
