Judge Dundy has returned to Fall City. The News says Hon. Tlio-CArwicfe' informs uh that the County Commi-ioners of Otoe Coun ty have contracted with tbe I & M. It. IL Co., to give the company $150, O00 In Otoe County IJonda, ff the said road 13 completed to ICtbraska City . -within eighteen months. The following named persons left this place yesterday for Nebraska City to attend the' State Sunday School Convention, which, is now in session in that city, to-wit: Wra. McCreery, Isaac Black, Mrs. Jacobson, Miss " ghurtz, Mr. Price, Dr. Blackburn, Mrs. Hetzcl and E. E. Ebright. They went as delegates from the Fresby te rian and Methodist Bunday Schools of Brownville. - The CI.roniclc informs us that a meeting of the citizens of Otoe county was held in Nebraska City-on lat Friday morning, which was nearly unanimously in favor of donating $1G0, 000 in bonds of that county to the B. A M. It. R.f as an inducement for buil ding a branch of that road to the Mis-, pouri river, opposite Nebraska City; also, that Prof. Fowler, of Boston, de livered a lecture on Fhrenology at the Court House on Friday evening, to an overflowing house. r . ' ' TliA CkanmonwcaUh alias . the Ne braska State Journal, is our main re liance for news from the Capital. Al though it doe3 not. so Inform the public, it doubtless intends to eail hereafter" under the hitter heading. "We rather like for the heading of a paper from the Capital "The Nebraska State Journal," but the style of the letters used by the paper in question might be more pleasing to the eye. However "there is no accounting for taste." We learn therefrom that Mr. Ticbenor has dieposed of his interest In the salt works of Nebraska, which Le held as a lessee from the State. ' From a communication In the Jour nal, re learn that the citizens of Grant precinct, in Richardson county, have organized a Grant rreclnct Anricul tural and Literary Society, with offi cers as follows : William Fenton, President Henry Allen, Vice President S. C. Barlow, Rec Secretary. Jeremiah Fenton, Cor. Secretary. M. L. Libbee, Treasurer. The Society numbers about twenty members, with a fair prospect of many others. The Society is composed of a respectable class of farmers, many of whom, have life long experience In farmine. whose views must prove very instructive to their fellow members of Ids experience and to the community at large; Agricultural papers will be read before the Society at each meet ing, and correspondence held with So cieties of older standing. Subjects of discussion will be proposed a week previous, giving each member ample time to prepare for the part he Is to take. A Lecture will lie delivered be fore the Society on the 22d inst, by Mr. Allen, Vice President, and on the following Saturday evening, by M. L. LIbbee, Treasurer. - There was a Delegate Railroad Con vention held In W. II. Hoover's office cn last Saturday, to consider the pro posed aid to the Trunk Railroad, the m!nutc3 of which are printed else where. There was but one opinion expressed, and that was in favor of a tlonation by the county to the Compa ny. The delegation pledged their ' Bcvcral precincts In favor of a donation of $132,000, by large majorities. They represented the opposition as trifling. A, general auxicty for the early con struction of a road up the river, pre vaded the mind3 of all present; Col. Furnas, one of the Directors in said company, said the Directors had done til they could, and were now at work vigorously to interest sufficient capi tal in the enterprise to Insure its com pletion at an early day, and that much now depended upon the. action of Richardson and Nemaha counties, and that with all they had done and could do, unless they could receive the aid from these two counties which . they now soek to obtain, itwa3 doubt ful if the road could be built If the company can get from these two coun ties, funds to grade, bridge and tie the road, tha the enterprise Is a fixed fict, for St Louis tenders tho capital for the iron and rolling stock. We tre T.ot of the number who believe towns and cities through which the road passes are to be materially bene fited, for the companies generally mr.he them, pay dearly for all addi tional strength they bring.. It Is the consumers, producers, manufacturers and fanners who are to receive the wealth the . road bring3 ; and they fchculd solve for themselves the prob lem as to whether they can allord the cutlay for the prospect it offers them cf wealth in the f uture. For ourselves, we have but very r.itis doubt that the improvements and- capital which the building of the- road wnl bnng. Into this county, and which but fr the building of tills road we would never have, will about ray all the taxes which will be-levied to meet the prin- drrvl ar.d interest cf this conation; did we rot so Ixlicvc. we should vote tgainct aiding t!ie road, thinking it a poor i reject; aud so belivir:g, we si .Il vote for the building cf the roud, let U run where- it iray through the county. uailkoao coxTExnoar. Jelefraf a from Several Preelnett Pr- nt AtKlU tonnijriioni uu"' Ameeting of del1; gr.t s of the several Precincts In Nemaha County wr u held In the Court House, according to an nouncement. ' On motion W. O. Glasgow was cho sen Chairman, and M. W. Cook Sec: rctary. With some discussion the following resolutions were adopted, viz; Whereas. The people of Nemaha county, having assembled in public meetings at fct. JJeroin, iSemana Uity, Jlilfednle. Brownville, and Peru, in said. Pcsolvcd, That as a company, known as the St Louis and Nebraska Trunk Railroad Company, proposes to construct sueh railroad in case reason able aid be rendered by the several counties in the State of Nebraska, through which the road proposes to pass, we deem it advisable that the County of Nemaha render aid to said enterprise. 3d. Jlcsolvcd, That we recommend that such aid be a donation in the sum of one hundred and thirty-two thou sand dollars, paj-able by issuing Coun ty Bonds in that sum pa3able in (20) twenty years from the date of issue, bearing interest at the rate of eight (8) per cent, per annum, deliverable to the said Railroad Company condi tionally, viz : that said Bonds be ap plicable only on the construction of said works of improvement through the County of Nemaha, and in install ments as follows: Fifteen Hundred Dollars ($1,500,00) per mile, payable when one or more miles of such road is graded to completion ; Fifteen Hun dred Dollars ($1,500,00) additional per mile when one or more miles be fully tied and bridged, ready for the iron, and One Thousand Dollars ($1,000,00) additional per mile when the iron is down and ready for the rolling stock, and the balance, if any, when the hrst train runs over the track, through said county ; Provided, That said road shall be completed to the southern line of Nemaha County on or before Jan uary 1st, lad. . 4th. Resolved. That we hereby re spectfully petition the County Clerk of Nemaha County, by virtue of the power vested in him, by law, to con vene the Board of County Commis sioners, In special session, at as early a day as the law will permit, to consid er "the propriety of submitting to a vote of the people of Nemaha County a proposition substantially or proxima ting that set forth in the foregoing resolutions. 5th. On motion, the name of Col. Furnas was added to the committee. W. G. GLASGOW, Ch'n. M. W. Cook, Sec'y. The sale of State Lands and Lots in Lincoln will commence at the Capital on the 3d .of June. Many persons from all parts of the country are mak ing preparations to be present The Capital will be crowded with men who have an eye to business, and we ex pect that the property of the State will command its full value. We hope to he present as a mero looker on and witness the grand scramble for corner lota. As editors are notoriously without funds, it would be impossible to sell to men of that class. No, we can't buy ; but we can, by going, see the chances to make money, which is the next best thing. Overland Monthly No. 5, Vol. 2, for May, has been received at this office. It is printed at San Francisco, at $1,00 pcryeaf, and is devoted to the Liter ature of the Far West; and every per son who wishes to keep pace with the development of the Pacific Slope, and the progress of the literature of that eventful "portion of our eminent do main, can read himself up in this mag azine more judiciously and correctly, perhaps, than from any other source. The Quiney folks are now agitating a Railroad from that place to some point in the vicinity of Nebraska City, running through the Northern tier of counties in Missouri. An adjourned meeting will be held at Kirksville on the last Tuesday in June, to provide for the preliminary survey of the route. A little energy and spirit on the part of our citizens, would secure the wes tern terminus of the road at Brown ville. John M. Bralnard Esq., ha3 retired from the edltorirl chair of the Coun cil BlulTs Nonparid, and John IL Keatly Esq., has taken possession. The latter gentleman has been engag ed for some time on the local depart ment of the paper, and promises to sustain its enviable reputation in fu ture. The Nonpariel 'is one of the best papers published in Iowa, m m We had occasion to drop into the County Trersurer'a office thl3 week, where to our surprise we found the County Clerk J. M. A Sunday School has been organ ized in the neighborhood of Jerry Marlatte's, and a Miss Maggie Jones, a very intelligent and deserving young lady of that viciuity, was in the city yesterday soliciting subscription in cash, with which to furnish the school a library. Her mission is a good one, and we hope she may be success ful. Nothing so commends a young man or young lady to our favorable opinion, as when they seek to elevate, enable and purify the minds and hearts of the youth of the land. - The Rev. "Henry Ward Ceecher is quite hopeful, as may be seen from the following passage in a recent ser mon of his : "I believe the time will yet come when ojy offices will be filled with honest men ; that men can go to the Legislature and not be corrupted ; that a man can be a judge and yet go to heaven." ' A bill contracted by Secretory Sew ard in telegraphing over the cable to Keverdy Johnson, has been presented to Secretary Fish by the agents of the telegraph company for payment. It consists of a single item and amounts to forty thousand dollars. Mr. Sew ard it seems was allowed cheap rates on Ids messages, and so became rather verbose. When this bill came in he refused to pay it. It therefore fell to the succeeding administration. Sce retary Fish declined to pay it, and when presented to President Grant, he sent it to Attorney General Hoar for an opinion, on which he i3 now engaged. It is stated that Secretary Rawlins Is determined to secure protection to the lives of union men in thebouth.
