" " - Just before two o'clock the House was, tnrown into a violent excitement, ana a, fearful scene of confusion. It appears that while Mr; Grow of Pennsylvania, was walking down the aisle of the Democratic slue of the Hail, Mr, Keitt, of South Carolina, and a. friend approached him, and a slight squabble en sued, and Mr. Keitt struck Mr. Grow. The parties were separated - by. their friends but they continued to exchange words in an evidently excited manner, and Keitt again dealt a blow at Grow, and the latter knocked Keitt down. Crowds of their respective friends then tushed 'to the rescue, ana various memocrs on eaoc siue encrarred in a fight in the area fronting- the clerk's desk. Vashburne of Illinois, was conspicuous among the Republicans, deal ing heaw blows. The Speaker loudly called for order and called on the Sergeant-alj-Arms to in terfere, and that functionary, carrying his mace of office, together with his as sistants, hurried to the scene, and crowd ed into the thickest of the fight, in which at least a dozen members were engaged, but it was some minutes before the con-1 test wa's quieted, the members very reluc tantly returning to their seats. There was now a dead calm in Comparison with the scne first enacted. 1 Mr. Campbell of Ohio j ' said - that he foresaw disagreeable feelings would re-( suit here from the exciting questions com nected with Kansas, and was called to or der by Mr. Barksdale. ," ' Mr.-Campbell said that he wished the gentleman from Mississippi to know that he was his peer -a member of Congress who was a witness to the difficulty Sn the House between Grow and Keitt, and gave the following particulars. , 1 Grow objected to Quitman maknrg any remarks. . '. - ,;r? : Keitt said if you -are going to object ti turn to vour own side of the House. Grow responded that this is a free hall and every man has a right to be where he pleases. . 1 ' Keitt then came up to urow, and said he wanted to know what he meant by such an answer as that ? Grow replied, that he meant jtist what he said, that this was a !free hall: and that ' a man has . a right to be where he nleasrs. Keitt then jrrabbed Grow by the throat, and Grow knocked his hand away, when Keitt came at him and Grow knocked him down. The fight took place at twenty minutes to 2 o'clock this morning.
