Es wird der näckistcn ; Administration . aufgegeben sein, wenigstens einige dieser Probleme zu lösen und eine weise Politik zu befolgen, die zur Lösung der anderen Fragen führen wird. Hunderte Millionen Männer und Fraueu in Amerika und Europa find von dem Ricsenkampf befreit worden, der zahllose Opfer in Plut und Gut kostete. Diese Millionen, genesen jeßt langsam von den Schrecken des Krieges. Sie versuchen, sich dem Frieden wieder anzupassen. Es ist, eine schwierige Aufgabe, denn die Welt ist wirtschaft lich noch ' in Chaos und sozial in einem Zustand der Verwirrung. Seit dem denkwürdigen Noveniber-Tage vor einem Jahre, als sich die preußische Autokratie ergab und ihre Weltherrschafts.Gelüste aufgab, sind buchstäblich Tausende von Abhilssinitteln sür die Kricgswehen der Zivilisation vorgebracht worden. V ' Der Redner war Generalmajor Leonard Wood und es scheint mir, daß er mit dem Obengcsägten näher kam, den Gedanken Ausdruck zu verleihen, die dem ' Herzen der amerikanischen Nation heute näher liegen,, als die ganze Schaar politischer Propheten, die an uns währen!' des vergangenen Jahres das Wort richteten. i . Ich bin der Ansicht, daß kein Mann in diesem großen Lande vorhanden ist, der auf eine an seinen Mitbürgern geleisteten reichere Dienste hinweisen kann, als dieser Soldat, Arzt und Administrator. Er hat sein ganzes, Leben seinem Lande in einem Berufe gewidmet, der, aus genommen in . Kriegszciten, nicht beliebt ist. Und dennoch sind feine großen' Dienste,, die einem fremden Volke Wohl: fahrt und seinem eigenen Lande unvergänglichen Ruhm ' brausten, in der Eigenschaft als Zivilverwalter und Ge schäftsleiter geleistet worden. , Es ist keine Parallele der Tätigkeit. Wood's in Cuha vorhanden. Wood's Tätigkeit in Cuba bildet eines der "glänzendsten jlapitel unserer nationalen Geschichte, eine der besten Säten in der Ge ' schichte der Zivilisation.' . , . . , ' I welchem Maßt dieser .Retter (uba's der Retter der Bereinigten Staaten während des letzten Krieges wurde, werden, wir, die lebende Generation, niemals fest, stellen ' können. Aber was wir wissen ist. daß er die Seele .
